Looks to be a busy player.

Has looked at ease against Spin and Pace/Bounce in the outings he had so far.

Can provide much needed left/right combination in the middle order.

Con :

His FC and List A record isn't very bright.

Your thoughts.

ODIs

1. Rohit

2. Gill

3. Kohli

4. Pant

5. Rahul

6. Hardik / Sundar

7. Jadeja / Sundar

8. Shardul

9. Shami

10. Chahal / R.Chahar

11. Bumrah

For me ... Sundar replaces either Jadeja or Hardik if any of them are rested or are injured.

Why should he bat at 4-5?

Have KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya retired or gone to koffee with Karan once again?

Has Sir Ravindra Jadeja hit himself accidentally by his sword celebration like one of the Pakistani fast bowler does while celebrating?

6/7 players should have power game as their main usp. Sundar can hit big shots but not sure if he can do that consistently as a finisher

Sundar isn't a big hitter as of now but can develop as one

I can recall Samson seriously develop his power game,he was a timer just like Rohit but for last 2 years now i see him develop  brute power in his shots, ine of the Top best hitters in LOI cricket in India

He has the basics to hit big. Can use the long handle. Needs to work on his big hitting a bit more.

I want him at 7 or 6 because I doubt he will ever get a chance higher up the order.

Cant understand this sudden love for Washington. He batted well, understandable but that doesn't make him the solution of our every problems, Few wants him to Open, Many are even talking about replacing him with Pure batsman in tests. And now this. Iyer, although looks ugly (Batting wise) has done reasonably well at 4 apart from recent Australia series. I guess the reason behind this emotional catharsis is that he played well when people had zero expectations from him. Even I am all for his place in tests as his recent exclusion wasnt acceptable still people do over-exaggerate things sometimes. He can at best play in place of Pandya in ODIs as of now, playing at No.6 and Pandya isnt going anywhere with his newly found role as of now.

Iyer was very poor against short balls and his technique was exposed. That is the reason I am not counting on him in the long term.

Pant isn't an ODI regular yet. If he is given opportunity to bat at 4 then no issue but he will be eventually tried as an opener and I feel he will make it big there.

Rahul, Hardik and Jadeja are already pretty much regular at 5,6 and 7.

Sundar doesn't have Hardik's hitting abilities also his bowling isn't good enough to replace Jadeja.

Jadeja's ODI bowling is not as impressive as his test match bowling.

Moreover, we don't have that many options as backup all-rounders.

Ganguly was piss poor against short pitch bowling and lot of other things.Sehwag never could play short pitch bowling. Iyer is young, fit and he is a batsman who has that X-factor about him.Who cares if he cannot bat very well against short pitch bowling.

Iyer is doing just fine leave him alone. How the hell has Sundar suddenly become better than him. Sundar has no ability to bowl more than 4 overs on a consistent basis. Jadeja is 32 and is in his prime form. So Sundar cannot replace him at number 6 or 7 and  he has no ability to use long handle. Let Sundar keep playing t20 , he will get more chances if he is doing very well there no need to force feed him.

Some people wanted to drop Rohit Sharma for him in tests and make him opener too, they truly live in lala land..

yes he can, i have saying these we need a mix of left -right in whole order . Ill rather go for jaddu

A leftie in middle is must to avoid leggies as Rahul n kohli have developed a problem against them

so did rayudu, he is surely an upgrade on him. Fact remains there are better talents then him. He will score runs against other sides but the minute its pace n bounce we know the end story and thats just not all he has issues against quick wrist spin and seam n swing to. Someone with to many problems will struggle. He has done well but its a small sample size . Its a tragedy if iyer keeps a guy like pant n gill out who are way way more talented

No at least not right now...  Sundar is only 21..  He needs to prove himself at IPl first also doesn't helps that his franchise sucks.  In my view he can be even better than the likes of Paddikal at the top.  He has the game.  Iyer will get longer rope at no 4 in ODIs at least for a few more series.  He should not be anywhere near T20 team though

There is no place for opening spot. So, he won't be tried as opener. Gill and Shaw will be considered after Dhawan. In the last ODI match India played, the indications were crystal clear. Pant will play at 4-5 with Iyer as backup replacement.

Sundar is not a specialist batsman and he is not a better batsman than Pant, Iyer or Suryakumar Yadav.

Iyer has a List-A average of 43 and ODI average of 44 at S/R of 100 compared to Sundar who has list-A average of 20, that's not even in same bus. The only reason some posters here are against Iyer is because he is making a player like Pant wait for a place in XI which is understandable.

The ODI team would be:-

Openers:-

Rohit

Dhawan

Gill

Shaw

Mayank

Samson

Middle order:-

Kohli

Rahul

Pant

Iyer

SKY

All-rounders/ lower middle order:-

Pandya

Jadeja

Sundar

Any young explosive hitter
