Number Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Please tell what do you do to keep yourself fit and healthy. Excercises, Yogas, breathing excercises like pranayam, strict diet control, meditation, playing any sport ? I do running 5 times a week. 4 days on treadmill for 20 minutes and 1 day outdoor for a long run of more than 10 KMs, maximum I have done is upto 15 Km. I do some of the pranayams like kapalbhati and anulom vilon etc after doing running but it is mostly 15 minutes at max. I have been trying to improve my dietary habits to lose some weight to improve running time and distance upto half marathon but its not working. Most days I end up eating anything I want and as much as I want. Gollum 1
Jimmy Cliff Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 No refined sugar, salt or oils in the diet. Used Healthifyme briefly to track calories but no longer feel the need to do it. Was a regular at gym doing weight training and cardio but Covid wrecked all that. Now do basic weight training using dumb bells at home. Have started nitric oxide dump exercises but too early to say if they've made any difference. Number, coffee_rules, Gollum and 1 other 4
velu Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 10km walk whenever possible .. again lockdowns screwed it , but i still try to cover 7/8kms regularly in our terrace i am not a foodie , so binge eating is not an issue need to control my sugar intake though Number and Jimmy Cliff 2
Gollum Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 (edited) LCHF (Low-carb, high-fat) diet plus Intermittent Fasting (17-19 hours fasting per day, working towards a 4 hrs eating window), once a fortnight I do prolonged fast for 48-72 hours, duration depends on schedule....only consume->water, lemon water, Indian ginseng, apple cider vinegar during long fasts. Given up items like rice, roti, processed food, sugar, high GI fruits etc. Used to be a gym rat but haven't been there since Mar 2020. So mainly push-ups, bodyweight squats, crunches. Not much of cardio, sadly. No meditation, but I do a version of Pranayam once a day for 15 minutes, my father taught me that, akin to Anulom Vilom. Put on weight during initial months of pandemic, last 5 months I have become very strict with my diet and feeling much better now. Boring food like seeds/nuts, egg, milk, spinach and other veggies etc but I can live like this. Only supplement I take is fish oil, all other vitamins/minerals are as per RDA from normal diet. Earlier I used to spend a lot of time playing sports, lifting weights and eating non-stop including lots of junk food. Now realizing the value of diet, hope to rejoin the gym in the future and with this new diet I should see better results. Another advantage of this diet is I get lot more free time, and meal prep is easy. Edited June 28, 2021 by Gollum Number and Jimmy Cliff 2
Gollum Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Also Vitamin D under the sun. Every alternate day I spend 20-30 minutes on the terrace with 2/3rds of my body exposed. Really brightens up my mood, so long I wasn't getting enough Vit D I think...diet can never give you enough of it. Need the sun's help, and must expose the skin sans sunscreen or any other blocker. Best cure for depression is Vit D, and in these times it is common for people to feel down for a variety of reasons. Number, Laaloo, BacktoCricaddict and 1 other 1 3

coffee_rules Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 13 suryanamaskars everyday and 20 mins of praanayama and yogaasana. Went low on vitD last year, Dr recommended to take supplementals. Stopped this year as I am outside everyday biking/walking. Watching carb intake, switched to millets for rice/whear. Millet/Quinoa dosa batter is amazing, Prepare it home. Number and Jimmy Cliff 2

I completely cut out simple sugars (white and brown sugar, honey, jaggery - all crap) and easily-absorbed starches (e.g., white rice, maida), keep fibre and protein levels high (PCLCLGIHF** diet). Snack exclusively on carrots, proudly-home-grown-non-organic cucumber and hummus. I've kept this up for 15months along with 15-20 miles fast walking per week, and all my old man problems disappeared. ** Portion control Low Carb Low Glycemic Index High Fiber = PC:C:GHF. Fat intake is also low-ish, but I don't monitor it as much as I do simple sugars and starch. Edited June 28, 2021 by BacktoCricaddict Jimmy Cliff and Number 2
EnterTheVoid Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Heavy squats, heavy deadlifts. Long distance riding on a regular basis (75 - 100 kilometres in one go). Chicken arms. Everything waist down works fine Number 1
Khota Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Very poor eating habits but run a lot. But desi daal and roti is not bad but samosas are not your friend. velu and Number 2
someone Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 General Health is about food. And feel India is at crossroads. One large population is malnourished, while a large urban population is obese. Latter needs to be addressed. Our street vendors are often untrained, and resort to butter , cheese overload only. And the public is crazy for such bad foods. Watching dilsefoode vlogs are so disgusting... velu and Number 2
Vickydev Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 (edited) Simple home food. I dont go for any specific diets as I tend not to stick to them. Jump ropes and 10-15 mins of high intensity shadow boxing especially in lockdown are great for the core, keeping in shape. Twice a weak I go for resistance training. Number Posted June 29, 2021 Author Posted June 29, 2021 Some of you people have excellent control over your food habits.

Long distance running is easier for a bulky person as you can take your time. But some friends do say your knees will be gone sooner if you keep running like this without losing 7-8 KGs (currently 179 cm- 81 Kg)

But here is the problem your knees are taking x4 the force as your weight which is a;most 800 lbs. That cannot be sustained for long time. My advice as I am an avid runner is mix it up with biking. That will strengthen your knees. Also change your stride .i.e. avoid backlift and it is ugly but you should just be dragging your feet. Avoid impact on the knees and enjoy running. Bulky person should not run. every long distance runner I know is thin and lean. It is better to be short too.

You're probably referring to this: Quote Miscellaneous: I avoid anything with the non-GMO label. It is getting harder, but I do everything I can not to buy foods with the butterfly logo. Ironically enough, the monarch butterfly depicted there is itself a "GMO," - it contains genes inserted into it by a wasp. It was on the other health and fitness thread. I avoid the non-GMO label because it spreads fear about a perfectly safe and valuable technology, hindering progress in agriculture. Ironically, they picked the monarch butterfly as their symbol - ignorant of the fact that the monarch is itself, by definition, a GMO (it contains functional genes from another species)! There are a number of posts here that describe GMOs in ag.
