with 0 infrastructure we got a 4th in golf, 4th in gymnastics last time, people in equestrian and fencing etc.

 

i think by 2040 we should definitely be getting a few bronzes in "uncommon" events and try to make it better. by then our core sports like wrestling, shooting, badminton, boxing, hockey, weightlifting should be world class and guarantee 10-15 golds.

 

china is doing that. they dominate their pet sports and now looking to get into canoeing, athletics etc.

Japan has always been a powerhouse in these 2 sports. Judo is a Japanese martial art, and they have always done well in wrestling especially in women's section.

Won't say surprise. They were always the favorites, top teams in both. In baseball they benefitted from MLB not releasing its players for the Olympics (for $$$$ reasons obviously). Only minor league American players were playing.....even other Latin American teams suffered because of this. Japan was always expected to cruise through.

Absolutely abhorrent and barbaric the way the Chinese treat young boys and girls as little as 4 and 5. Even the most hard hearted person would be teary eyed to see a 4 year girl in tears with her coach waiting to smack her if she fails..should we even consider these as achievements.. which century are we living in for god sake..

china's tally is overstated.

 

i think they would still do well cause rise in income leads to rise in sporting achievement. but these camps push it to the next level.

 

they would be a 60-65 medals, 20-25 gold nation without the camps. (what we should reach by 2040s)

 

like they were insanely good in 1984 too when they were dirt poor.

 

Not the case with South Korea or Taiwan who sucked when poor.

BTW Paralympics start from 24th August. This could be the most keenly followed Paralympics in India. We have our largest ever contingent with 54 athletes with genuine Gold Medal contenders in Devendra Jhajharia and Mariappan Thangavelu.

Turns out Neeraj Chopra is actually of Maharashtrian descent and traces his lineage to Maratha soldiers who settled around Panipat after the 3rd battle of Panipat in 1761! No wonder he took liking to Javelin throw. His name is Neeraj Chopde!
