The largest amounts of UK Sport money were spent on rowing (£27m), cycling (£26m) and athletics (£25m). The high overall costs of cycling - particularly in its the track form - lie in the need for the latest technology in bikes, helmets and clothing; such as the 'hot pants' used to keep Team GB cyclists' muscles warm before their race.

British cyclists won 12 medals in London, including 7 golds in the velodrome, with technological superiority no doubt playing an important part in their successes. This puts spending on cycling in perspective - the average spend per cycling medal was £2.2m, compared with £8.4m of spending for each Olympic swimming medal (overall spend £25m).

The rowers also provided value for money. Their nine medals, four of which were gold, meant the average expense per medal was £3m. British boxing proved the most cost effective of all, as Team GB's five medals put the average cost of a boxing medal at £1.9m.

It is worth noting that the figures are skewed towards sports with a larger number of individual chances to win a medal. In hockey, Team GB's women won a bronze medal, putting the cost of that medal at £15m. It was only ever possible for Team GB to win 2 medals in hockey, as opposed to swimming or cycling, in which there were many more medal contenders.

Total UK Sport funding for the London 2012 Olympics was £264,143,753, up from £235,103,000 spent on the Beijing Games. For London 2012, money from UK Sport was supplemented by a private sponsorship scheme known as 'Team 2012'.

Since 2008, a total of around £100m per year has been invested in 1,200 athletes competing across 47 different sports in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

So if you look at purchase parity india would need to put in 200 million usd in sports to get a similar money per count

I think there are various factors which are responsible for a country like India which is so so diverse yet fails miserably in Olympics.

Main culprit is government. They don’t care about sports, it is useless for them. Indian government want to capitalize on everything and sports have no return money policy. State government and Central government can invest in infrastructure for sports but this will not generate any tax for them.

They have clear cut policies about athletes, first prove your worth to us.

First win a medal at Olympic, then you will get help from the government but to get a medal you need help from the government. This is a vicious deadlock in Indian sports.

Basic Infra is lacking.  If Chinese can do well in Swimming no reason why Indians can't.  They also used to be bad at it.

There is a Chinese province Zhejiang where they made made swimming as 20 points in entrance exam for senior high school (like JEE or NEET). So every child in that province learns swimming and by that, good athletes pop out.  But for that you need to provide sufficient Infrastructure in schools in specific areas.  My preference would be North East.

How is gov main culprit?

Our tax to gdp ratio is abysmal.

You want gov investment but also no taxes?

See if india is to emerge on a global stage your self employed businessman doctors lawyers etc need to start paying their taxes.

Olympics and any sector which requires gov funding is highly dependent on taxes the population pays.

As gb the country is mentioned the personal tax rates are some of the highest in the world.

Our per capita income is low that's why income tax is low. Govt anyway squeezes a lot through indirect taxes.

This feku govt is wasting money on making stupid statue and temples instead of using money to develop sports related infrastructure.

When did govt spend money on making temples?

Please take your trolling elsewhere.

The fact that these guys are top ranked, qualify and are given facilities compared to the 80’s and 90’s means some things are being done right

as india becomes richer, performances will become better (same happened with korea and taiwan).

We have higher GDP than all these countries. To become rich with this population, it will take 50 years, maybe more

From where Tax will come? Modi government claim that they provide free ration to 80 crores Indians. I guess those who are so poor are not in taxable bracket. Now remain 60 crores out of which 24 crore are under 18. So only 36 crore remain. Now out of these 36 crore assuming 50-60 % live in rural area. So there main source will be agriculture income which is tax free . So 18 crores remained .  Out of which there will be so many students , house wives . seniors , unemployed etc the remaining 7 crore are already filing their return. The truth is large section of India is not in position to pay taxes unless you start forcing people to pay tax even if they are earning 1 rupee

The Chinese have a stable of 400k children who are trained specifically for the Olympic Games from an age of 6. They are govt employees trained to be good at only one thing. Are we prepared to spend for something so trivial when we have so many issues to address?

The only we we can match their medal table is that:

1. we are dictatorship which cares about country image on the global stage OR

2.A  wealthy country with a top sporting culture

we are far off from either option so don’t expect overnight success

I will be happy if we can pick a few events and have multiple contenders for those events like the Uzbeks. China started focussing on Badminton and TT. Later they got into the other sports. I was hoping Shooting would come into its own this year - but we clearly need more consistent performers in it.
