Root has now made 2,500+ runs since the start of 2021. :omg::clap2:. Credit where it's due this has to be appreciated.

 

I can't remember a batsman scoring this much in such a short span of time!!. Closest was ponting when he made 1500 runs in 2003 & 2005. Someone correct me if i'm wrong. Even he couldn't do it in consecutive years.

Joe Root has tamed the greatest Indian bowling attack of all-time like none. He has played Bumrah and Ashwin both like a master. 

 

Against India, he has scored 2460 runs at an average of 61 now. In this series , he is currently sitting at 691 runs at average of 96 and three of those innings were lone warrior hundreds from him. Unbelievable record vs India.

In your post, Steve smith & Kohli 's stats are for 2 years when it is 1.5 years (Jan 2021 - Jul 2022)as of now for Joe Root. Roughly 533 days. In this period he has scored 2,569 runs with 10 Hundreds & 6 fifties. He's yet to play 6 more tests in this calendar year (3 against SA & 3 against Pakistan if i'm not wrong after the T20 WC). If he continues with this form, he will easily beat both of them in this run aggregate. I have huge respect for Steve smith but what joe root is achieving now deserves praise.

Another way of comparing the fab four is based on who has done best against all the major nations :-

 

Vs India - Root/Smith
Vs Australia - Kohli
Vs England - Smith
Vs New Zealand - Smith
Vs South Africa - Root/kohli
Vs Pakistan - Williamson 
Vs Sri Lanka - Root
Vs Windies - Smith

 

Conclusion :-

 

Smith - 4
Root - 3
Kohli - 2
Williamson - 1

 

Hence, in Tests , Smith > Root > Kohli > Williamson

More or less the same. 24/25 matches. And root was carrying the english line up till bairstow joined him in nz series.

Forget more centuries than Kohli.

 

Tendulkar's record number of test runs under threat.  

 

I missed peak Tendulkar and Lara, would say Root is the best batsman i have seen.

 

Steve Smith's numbers are better but i think with his unorthodox technique he will decline quicker.

 

Root almost never seems out of tough, scores quickly without taking risks and is now regularly converting 50s to 100s.  

 

ABDV was more talented but Root gets more out of his ability.

Root in my eyes is the most attractive batsman I've seen since Tendulkar. Smith although better is far too scratchy and awkward and Kohli always lacked the versatility and broader shot selection.
