maniac Posted September 21, 2021 Posted September 21, 2021 Case in point today’s game. Match should have been over in 19 overs. Now besides the script, etc jokes this is getting ridiculous and I hate every Indian cricketer saying they learnt this from Mahi bhai. Finish the game when you have a chance raki05, nevada, beetle and 1 other 3 1
zen Posted September 21, 2021 Posted September 21, 2021 (edited) Ideally, a team should try to chase as if there are 19 overs, treating the 20th over as an emergency bonus. But there are many ebbs and flows in a game that if a side is chasing a competitive total esp. against a decent side, the game can go to the last ball. No matter what planning you do, once the game begins, the practical aspects of the game can be different, making the game exciting! As the saying goes - “Till the last ball is bowled, …” Edited September 21, 2021 by zen

Finish the game when you have a chance As much as we hate the current version of Dhoni, at his peak he combined mental fortitude with great skill. None of the current bunch in middle/ lower order are close to what dhoni was at his peak. We have got to a point where lack of skill and a tendancy to choke are blamed on Dhoni, similar to how Pakistani blame us for all thier internal issues.
SK_IH Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 (edited) Yesterday's match last ball thing had nothing to do with taking to last ball, it was a simple combination of two back to back good overs by Fizz & Karthik & some old skool choking by the batsmen. Both batsmen were trying to hit but couldn't. Edited September 22, 2021 by SK_IH
rollingstoned Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 Well it is not that they did not try to win it before the last over. What guys like msd and bevan had perfected is not a template all should follow.

That's BS, at his peak Yuvraj as well as Raina were hitting it out of the park - he was never really that much of a finisher as he's made it out to be, excellent case in point was the 2011/12 Tri series down under!
sage Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 It's intentional to boost TRP. IPL script writers want a Bollywood finish every game velu and New guy 1 1

New guy Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 Unlike MSDs controlled calculations, this is not intentional. This is just a poor team getting under pressure. As soon as they are in sight of victory, they feel under pressure and choke Pooran was also culprit last year when he went for wild slogs with 9 wickets left and rahul on the other side. He got out and Punjab choked with 9 wickets left and under run a ball required for over 3 overs and rahul still batting This time pooran tried the opposite approach and team choked again Both extremes, blind slogging or just tuk tuking in sight of victory is because of pressure. Good teams dont change approach when close to victory but treat each ball on merit The moment you decide you need to change something (lets take it to last over, lets finish it before 19) you are likely to overthink and lose the plot. The secret is to not change anything and keep playing naturally as before without thinking or planning too much

vvvslaxman Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 I remember Yuvraj saying once, he always wants to finish one over before as anything can happen in the last over.
