All format batsmen

Do they really exist?? there are few batsmen who are successful.. on paper their numbers might suggest they are doing well across formats but that too seems to be for a very short duration... take Rohit's example.. he plays across the formats.. but ever since his test numbers have improved his ipl/t20 stocks have nose dived.. and then there are others like Warner who dont do well in overseas in tests.. these all format guys have some issue or the other.. when they do well in tests, their t20 performances take a dip or vice-versa... only Kohli had a crazy 3-5 year window where he fid very well and now Babar is going through that patch.. though smith/KW play t20s they are present mostly to help on slow/moderate pitches.. TM which is most clear on this topic is England.. they have not  picked Root recently and not even after his mind boggling recent form and they are always looking for reasons/excuses to drop the nbr 1 ranked t20 batsman in the world just because he doesnt align with team's motto.

Grame Smith

not this generation though

He wasn't an odi great by any standards.

Babar averages 40 in test cricket, that's nothing special.

In the last decade only Kohli, Devilliers, Amla, Sangakkara were all format greats

With today's bench strength (talent pool) and resources, it makes sense to align players with suitable formats.

Talking about multi-format players, I would say Viv Richards, Jayasuriya, Gilchrist, Kapil, etc., are good enough to play any format or pick their formats.

Richards should be the goal standard , rest cab be compared with him. Miandad comes close.

Tendulkar was much ahead of Miandad even ponting was much ahead.,if we are talking about only test and odis. As none of oldies played t20 and even in hypothtical scenario Miandad was mostly a tuk tuk player he was not a hard hitter or even high sr batter.
