R!TTER Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Color is a separate topic & that in the context of India is not what I'd consider racial, unless you are now going to break us up further after - caste, creed, religion, language, place of birth etc. I'm not sure how you'd classify it as but for me it isn't a racial thing, it is still abuse though & discrimination! Calling someone darkie or black has racial undertones. White is seen as the colour of beauty. White skin isn't frowned upon. Sure, you get some pasty looking white people who may appear awful however majority of india sees White skin or light skin In general as the avatar of beauty personified. You get treated differently. It's the old school antiquated thinking concocted by the Brits to subjugate and render Indians as a servile class. Things are changing though. Distinct features in terms of low body fat levels with defined facial structure is now seen as a sign of beauty rather than colour. Still, majority of the popular Bollywood actresses tend to be atleast light brown in skin colour. Hell, south is worse. Most darker skinned actresses get shunned before they audition from what I hear unless they have the right level of assets to flash. Lord 1

Not saying south is best in the world but miles better than north. Guys like Prabhas, Vishal etc. would never get roles in bollywood if not for their success in south. So many top actresses I can name have reached pinnacle of success in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada industries who are not light skinned - think Amala Paul, Nivetha Thomas etc. Name me ONE from North Indian - Bollywood films in recent times. Bollywood is worse bringing in foreigners like Nora Fatehi, Katrina, Jacqueline Fernandes, Sunny L etc. just because of their "lighter skin". This whole idea that opportunities are NOT denied in India due to color of skin is laughably pathetic. Fair and Lovely still runs ads in India - just with a different name - a totally racism inducing organization if you ask me. Name one ad campaign in India especially from the north for soap, beauty cream etc. where a darker skinned person is given opportunities when majority of India is darker skinned. I laugh at the rose tinted glasses people have. One of the most racist people in the world are Indians and by that I mean the entire Desi community. Funnily enough we do this at our own detriment as if we support BLM and other organizations it will technically benefit us - those dark skinned Indians too in some deep red neck southern states get equal opportunity. Fair enough. I am not too familiar with south Indian movies but from what I heard, most actresses seem to be of light skinned colour. You are right that actors like prabhas and especially vishal won't be popular due to the skin colour in Bollywood even though prabhas is actually quite a handsome man himself. Not to mention his amazing physique. allu arjun and ram charan conversely are very popular in the North. However, both are on the lighter side like you said. Madhavan is the only other popular darker skinned Bollywood actor and even that is questionable tbh.
zen Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 (edited) Sorry to hear that! … Unfortunately, this may get not much attention as a) many in India do not care (you may listen to all kind of “childish” stories on how discrimination does not happen in India), and b) most of the world does not care about matters in India Edited November 30, 2021 by zen GoldenSun 1

One don't have a chance unless they are of specific castes and heroines has to be well groomed as miss universe. This is particularly rampant in Telugu and Kannada but not uncommon in Tamil industry as well. As far as LSJ is concerned I won't be surprised if he has pursued gori girl during his matrimonial days . That's the level of hypocrisy that exists in our society.
Stan AF Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 This is not news. This is a fact, an everyday occurrence of life.
Lone Wolf Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 While Indians are most of the times racist... Mallus themselves have some sort of complex.. They hilariously cast North Indian actresses in their movies. Racism exists everywhere in India. So no point blaming North Indians. Most of the time casual racism is thrown at North east people everyday in different parts of India. LSK needs to retire with dignity from commentary box.. He is unbearable most of the times.

While it shouldn't happen in an ideal society,it is part of adult life, its how you deal with it. Denying opportunities etc is different and serious as it has bigger impact. i agree it is part of adult life. but it should not be part of a child's life. it's the dark kid in the school playground that concerns me. what goes on there filters down from wider society.

Color doesn't mean racist. Race doesn't mean color alone but facial features which are different than us in actual black people or mongloids. Lighter color is preferred everywhere in the world. Doesn't make every one racist. That's how humans are. They prefer light, not dark.

Actually most of India is still new to all this... I actually meant sometimes offensive words can be used. I haven't seen that much towards south Indian people as these guys are regarded as quite intelligent but mostly introvert types. North East is a different issue though.. In Delhi Punjab belt when their students come for studies they are called a lot of things.. That's why they stick to their own groups mostly & don't mingle as easily with others.
goose Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 racism, in it's true toxic form, needs to come with a power imbalance for it to meet the definition. it's why a white person living in the UK can't realistically claim to suffer racism. it's why the quip 'all lives matter' in response to BLM is nonsense.

DeepSpace Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 (edited) India is one of most racist countries amongst developing nations. Talk to the black Africans who live and work in India. The abuse they face daily. People are so nonchalant about color discrimination, it comes out unfiltered and like second nature. Then there is cast discrimination, wealth discrimination, etc. Never though too much about when I was living in India as part of Hindu majority, until I came to the US and faced overt discrimination from Whites and Blacks. We come across as hypocrites when we call "Kalu", "Chinki", "Gora", "Makku" etc in the US but get agitated when someone passes racist comments on us. Being Indian somehow makes such name calling right. It is imbibed in all communities and nationalities in the world, only Indians come up with juvenile excuses and deny being one.

Sorry Colorism becomes racism when you leave your country. We are racist because of the colorism which for some reason is accepted and is considered normal in India. It should not be. We come outside and experience racism and get angry or frustrated but we don't mind being racist towards other communities in the US and other western countries.
