Laxman Sivaramakrishnan says he has faced colour discrimination all his life

Former India leg-spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan has said that he, for years, has faced insults because of his skin tone.

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, who has played 9 Tests and 16 ODIs for India, wrote on Twitter: “I have been criticised and colour discriminated all my life, so it doesn’t bother me anymore. This unfortunately happens in our own country.”

What he said is probably true but I'm not sure tweeting about it helps anybody.

There's is no color discrimination in India. There's no black or white here, he might have faced banter from friends, or in school or college, few might have called him kaal@# etc. Discrimination is a big word, discrimination means, we won't offer you a job because you are Dark toned, or we will not serve you food because you are dark . In India we discriminate on caste, religion etc etc. Muslims cannot buy homes in Hindu housing societies, or Hindus cannot buy houses in Muslim localities, that's discrimination. LS is just trying to be relevant, and grabbing attention here.

Yes some people from North India never fail to  refer to South Indians skin colour and make jokes about it.

Example - watch  any Bollywood movie or North Indian tv dramas. 

 

Similarly some people from South India don't even think of North Indians (Bihar, Up etc) as humans, calling them illiterate, mannerless and what not

I have friends who studied there and they don't want to go back, there experience has been terrible.

Star Sports is definitely discriminating against him! He is never seen on camera, always doing commentary only off camera. Everyone like Gavaskar, Manjrekar, Agarkar, Hayden, Irfan, Simon Doull etc. is intermittently seen on camera between sessions but never LSK!

Its not like that. Someone like Russel Arnold has not been color discriminated why should it be for LS.

 

Yes they would prefer better looking guys to be on camera, its the same everywhere. But then if you have interesting ideas or approach towards the game fans would love to watch you explain them. LS doesnt even have that, he is as dull and old school as they come

In a professional environment as commie, I doubt he eould have been colour discriminated.

Doesn’t need to. Color discrimination is rampant in India. People are often casual and subtle so you may think it’s not a big deal but it is.

Discrimination means denying him of opportunities in his playing/commentating career because of his color. Would love to hear it.

I am sorry if Indian's think that we do not discriminate against colour and not racist, that is the part of the problem. Saying that we are of the same race so it is not racist is the stupidest argument I have seen in my life. I have lived abroad for 17 years now and have seen Indians from all parts of the country and I can say with authority that Indians are more racist than any other nationalities. We don't think anything is racial so we think we are not. Didn't Abhinav Mukund post something like this few months ago? This happens in all walks of life in India but we just don't think we are hurting anyone as we don't even know what we are doing. One of the Indian guys in office came to me and told me "Oh you don't look like a South India as the colour of South India is different, I looked at him and told I will complain to HR if he is being racial". He said "what? I am not being racial", I told him "If you are talking about skin colour, you are being racial and we are not in India and it is a serious over here".

 

I had friend who said her north Indian colleagues and managers constantly passed comments about her colour and she had grown immune to such comments and ignored them.

bullying/mocking happens to fat/bald/gay/disabled and basically anyone 'different',not just dark skinned. While it shouldn't happen in an ideal society,it is part of adult life,its how you deal with it.
