Why are Indian squad selections so random?

Pool is increasing because of IPL. BCCI and IPL Franchises wants as many players to have international exposure as possible which works for the team's and sponsors with their marketing. The selectors should be good enough to find out right players for big tournaments like WCs and series in SENA countries.

Selectors are having same type of players in the rotation- Deepak Chahar, Bhuvi and Thakur can should not be in same 15, there are 3/4 wk in the team. Chahal was nt able to  make it to the playing 11 of last 2 WCs why is he being persisted with, when captains do not trust him in the 11.

Most likely the batting would be the same (Plus a Dhawal )which played this T20 WC, which has no allrounder in top 5, and top 3 have similar approach of scoring.

Opening spot:  Rohit/Dhawan/Rahul/Gill

Back ups: Shaw/Ruturaj/Jaiswal

That is where the real crowd is.

Middle order we have assorted players

All rounders: Pandya, Venkatesh Iyer,Hooda

Batsman:  Shreyas Iyer, SKY, Samson, Pant, Kishan

Back ups: Patidar, Sarfraz,

Lower order

All rounders: Chahar, Thakur, Sundar,Ashwin

Spinners: Chahal, Kuldeep, Bishnoi

Pacers:  Bumrah, Arshdeep, Bhuvi, Shami, Umran

Back ups: Kuldeep sen, Moshin khan, Khaleell, Yash Dhayal

Then there are a lot of fringe players like Abhishek sharma, Ryan Paragh  are coming up. Pretty decent bench strength. All t he more reason India shouldn't be hesittating to kick out leeches.

We should finalize 18-20 odd players by the start of the next series ( after BD) and give them ample game time in their positions.

Right now, here are the players (26) that are in contention

Batsman (7)

Rohit, Dhawan, Gill, Kohli, Rohit, Iyer, Sky

WK(3)
Pant, Smason, Ishan

Allrounders (7)
Pandya, Jadeja, Washington,  Hooda, Axar, Chahar, Shardul

Spinners(3)
Yuzi, Kuldeep, Ashwin

Pacers(6)
Bumrah, Shami, Siraj, Prasidh, Arshdeep, Umran

Add Ruturaj now.. that's 27.

I don't think anything will change in 2023 World Cup. But assuming Rohit and Dhawan retires right after 2023 WC, we are looking at Gill, Shaw and Ruturaj as opening options.

You forgot Baapu in the lower order all rounder category. Also, I would have Sundar in the all rounder category than lower order A/R.

India definitely can field 2 teams. Only reason that doesn't work as per the plan is because of bowling. They need to create two units that are similar to each other. We have only one Bumrah. We have a lot of Bhuvi like bowlers, Arshdeep like bowlers.

We can field 2 teams sure..But our focus should be on strengthening our first team so much so that they are capable enough to beat top teams in big games also. The World Cup is 10 months ago.

Unfortunately our first team is full of oldies. So form must play a part not reputation. Doesn't matter if Rohit scored 5 centuries in 2019.  His strike rate in ODI last year is acecptable. But other 3 were very poor even against low ranked sides.

Today, they have selected Deepak Hooda instead of Samson. I don't see any point of selecting him in Indian ODI team. We are unnecessarily increasing the pool of players here. This is not a right preparation for ODI World Cup.

Hardik Pandya is a given at no.6 in ODIs and if he is fit and bowling then there is no question on his place.

In case he gets injured you have Washington Sundar who has got good temperament, improved his range of shots and seems to have perfected in timing the ball well too. He is your backup for Pandya. There is no need for Hooda just for the sake of getting the balance right in today's game.

Moreover, you will also have Jadeja at 7 and Axar Patel is also there as backup and he is in Bangladesh squad. So, what is the need of trying Deepak Hooda here in New Zealand? Why not go with six batsman, analyse them after this series (3 games) and then make decision on which all players you will move forward?

Now, what they have done is rejected Samson unfairly after first game, he isn't in Bangladesh squad also and then the home series vs other teams will start where the main players will be there. So, I don't see Samson getting chances anytime in recent future in ODI format. Only if Rahul/Pant get injured or decide to rest again in ODI bilaterals for the orange Cup race in IPL and the home series vs Australia, Samson has a chance but come the World Cup they will go back to Rahul/Pant again.

What we need is to strengthen the pool of 15 players that will go into the World Cup and make them world class rather than trying to give everyone games and instead increase the count to 30 good players.

Hooda is a hard hitting batsman and a PACY Spinner who are effective in T20 and even in ODI when runs have to be controlled. He is a very hard hitting batsman and it makes sense to try him out in ODI's too. he has managed to hit a century against ireland in a t20...he is good no doubt about it.

Failed today..not convinced because he went missing in Asia Cup and WT20 too.

Washington is better bet imo and a better bowler too.

Why are they resting Umran Malik from the  team to Bangladesh? Why is Samson dropped? Not saying they are better than the others.

If a youngster doesn’t get a fair run he will always play under pressure to perform.
I find the process a little too random with not enough talent identification and more playing by random numbers and hoping something clicks. Indian selectors ATM are picking random names and getting paid for it.

Our selections for white ball cricket are not based on any modern understanding of the its needs. Unlike England, PAK, NZ and even SL in recent times,  our selectors are way behind the times.

Also, I dont think the current structure of our domestic is reliable. Too many mediocre players who inflate their numbers.

Our selections and strategies in white ball are well behind even SL at this point. BCCI is a failure of an organization and only interested in playing politics etc.

and generating revenue

They aren't random, it's a well planned strategy to keep the boat afloat for seniors.
This musical chair will stop 2 months before the WC and then likes of Bhuvi, Shami, Bumrah, Arshdeep will be the 4 pacers while Ashwin, Jadeja/Axar, Chahal as spinners.

Umran played in NZ, Kuldeep might get a game in Bangladesh....but they won't be in final XI because of lack of experience. Prasidh is already suffering due to that ODI only policy.
