India needs a captain who is passionate about Tests

Bazball, Jambat whatever it is you need a captain who likes to play Tests and excel in it.    Does Rohit belong to that category? No way. If he had that kind of hunger he would have played more Tests for India already.  Whatever we say Kohli was committed to Tests.. That is the starting point. Then only you are likely to think about winning Tests. Less said the better about KL Rahul. Unfortunately not a lot that are available have this passion about Tests.  Pant/Jadeja/Bumrah are likely to be regulars going forward. Bumrah's captaincy looked distinctly ineffective at the oval. Can't blame him given his lack of experience. Jadeja is a better soldier than King. So that leaves us with Pant. Pant has to take the leadership and move this side forward. Starting from fitness he should set the standard for other team members.

We should do a Greame Smith and appoint Gill as captain, Hanuma Vihari also showed good understanding of game as a captain based on his domestic. Washy also looks to me a captain material.

But Ashwin is not a sure starter overseas. Once Jaddu is back he is going to sit out.

overseas even Rohit always misses out lol.

Ever since rohit was handed over the captaincy in all 3 formats, he has missed out 75% of the games due to injury/rest/poor fitness.   This is a sort of shamefull record as a captain..  Pant should be groomed as test captain, but first of all he must promise to get rid of his belly forever.    Otherwise he will be another rohit in the making with poor fitness as a benchmark.

he will promise to grow it by 1 inch for every victory we get, and decrease by 1 inch for every loss.

Indian players passion is IPL and T20 cricket these days. Just the kind of perks and price tag associated, why would anyone not have that passion?

Tests is no longer the passion. Someone needs to set an example for the likes of Gill or Shaw or other U-24 players to have that passion for winning test matches. Kohli used to have that but he no longer has and he doesn't seem to care if the youngsters have that or not.

Pant is your answer right here.

Pant in Test Cricket is a force.

Yes Pant should be groomed, which is why making Pujara VC, was the Madness that is Indian Cricket.

I think Kohli as a test captain did not receive much of a flak. But as a batsman he regressed so bad that he doesn't even warrant a place in the side. Unfortunately our country's hero worshipping culture make sure selectors always end up backing these players.

See his regression started with Covid .He was fine till then.No one could forsee what happened to him as a batsman , he was supposed to be in his peak years.

I don't think you could classify him getting chances as due to hero worship. He is the best overall batsman of this generation and he had to be given the chances to gert right. But unfortunately  for him whole batting order became useless. So that amplified his failures

Guys like Dravid or Laxman used to have bad series but someone  was always performing.

I don't think you can attribute to coivd. Everybody from Root to Smith faced COVID . Suddenly COVId is not going to make you miss simple off spinning deliveries or left arm spinning deliveries.  He was consistently getting out chasing 7th stump 8th stump line deliveries. He was doing the same thing over and over and over.

If it was just slump in one format, I would have agreed with you. He was slump in all formats.Kohli should not have any problem in whiteball cricket. His game is built for whiteball cricket. He should get till Australian series and if he still does not perform then he should be gone.

Now that he had a great T20 in world T20, shouldn't the slump be over? He is still clueless against spin.

One innings, let him play this series and if he still remains clueless then he should be gone.He got a good delivery to be honest, that is a dream delivery for a left arm spinner. Both him and Pujara got out to very good deliveries.

India need to get rid of deadweights in all formats and give chance to young players who are doing well. If we keep carrying players not performing well in all formats for nostalgia, we will never be able to progress to the next level. Also we need to look past Rohit, don't think he should be our captain in any format. He hardly plays and even if he does, he hardly scores. Unfortunately we don't have many candidates for captaincy in Tests, Pant & Bumrah are the only options I see but the latter is always injured as well.
