within the given constraints (i.e., the selectors choice of 16), your team is good. mine is nearly the same, as follows:

Kishan

SKY --> it's tonk-tonk time

Gill

Rohit Sharma (c) --> since Fatman cannot be dropped, I'd rather have him play a consolidator kohli-type role

Iyer

Pandu

sundar --> use sundar as floater.

umran

kuldeep

shami --> even old man shami is better than arshdeep for ODIs

siraj

you'd risk Sky against the new ball knowing he can find the boundaries even with everyone on the ropes?

Have the ability to reach 350+ to 400 when batting first. (assumes flat pitch) or chase any target given the depth in batting.

Agree in principle but you need to understand our deference for the likes of Dhawan, Kohli, Hitman and to a lesser extent Kela not to mention 'playing it safe' at the top of the order ie being consistently around 40-50/0 after 10 overs  is precisely because leading upto the 2019 world cup this approach got us many 350-400 scores. It was exacerbated by a weak middle order - for which we never groomed anyone - and what was perceived to be an unreliable lower order. Since that time however the ones we banked on then and continue to bank on now have declined or are not in the same form that they were when they made merry then, meaning we need to now revisit that whole approach and bat aggresively like England do and distribute the risk.

I don't see SKY as ODI batter either. Yes he was good in FC once but he has been playing T20s, T15 tournaments in Mumbai for most of the time since last few years. I'd rather have him fit and firing in T20s than mixing him in other formats.

Big fan of Pant in Tests, but he hasn't done justice to his talent in LOIs. So nothing wrong in giving him a break and trying out some other options. Batting and keeping in three formats + IPL takes a toll.. Pant has had issues with form and fitness, so the break might actually help him.

Also, excited to see Kishan open and Gabbar's long-overdue sacking happen finally.. Would like to give kishan one full series as opener + wicketkeeper to see what he has to offer.. Would be travesty if Rahul keeps though

Pant shouldn't be there in T20s but in ODIs in last 2 years he is averaging 42 with strike rate of 106. At no. 5/6 in LOIs more often than not a player will score low only, judge a player by his impact knocks on that position. We are going to screw our own chances if we let KL Rahul play at that position. He just can't handle slightest bit of pressure.

No Pant in LOIs now.

Kela retains his place in ODIs.

Good to see no Bhuvaneshwar but Mukesh Kumar in T20s.

Yuzi Chahal still remains there.

Not keeping Shreyas in T20s is a good decision in my opinion.

Ind T20Is side lacks power and SR all the batters apart from SkY and Pandya (and to some extent and small sample size Hooda) have low 130s SR.

All of them are more of accumulators for their respective sides and lacks the will and the capabilities to score at higher SR.

This has been the major problem with Ind set-up, in IPLs Ind player or Ind hopefuls/batters pays reserved kind of cricket and big hitting is left to foreign players.

Foreign player are the ones who have to provide the impetus to score. And Ind batter looks to score big runs at the cost of SR and start hitting only once they goes past certain personal score.

And when you assemble a team from this pool you are more often going to get batters with reserved kind of mentality. Tripathi is the only one who seems to have  t20 mind set.

they seem prone to kicking out Pant. and kela will be retained no matter what

Pant has been booted out to protect Kela in ODIs.

There's a limit to negativity. Just wait for confirmation. Everybody knows he is our no.4.

T20Is ...

1. What has Mukesh Kumar done in this format  ?

Nothing really. Same with Mavi.

T20Is ...

2. Just 1 Quick and 4 Medium Pacers again.  No tall hit the deck pacer.

Pace attack looks too friendly barring Umran and Arshdeep upfront.

Kuldeep injured. Bumrah rehabing. As usual, they rest some key players against Sl/WI etc., so Siraj is out.

And do we really have many tall pacers to chose from? Our bowlers struggle to touch 6' these days.

for no. 7, we have shami. he can bowl 'em yorkers. I assume your post is just referring to SL series; otherwise, boomer (bumrah) can bowl in death overs.

It's not about can, he doesn't believe in yorkers. But we do have Arshdeep, Kuldeep Sen. Hoping Boom and Siraj to get in groove, their death bowling is accurate.

Im going to ignore picking a T20I team as its irrelevant for 2023, here is my best team for the ODI given the squad, which means I dont have to pick all the uncles.

Rohit Sharma (C),

Ishan Kishan (wk),

Shubman Gill,

Suryakumar Yadav,

Shreyas Iyer,

Hardik Pandya (VC),

Washington Sundar,

Kuldeep Yadav,

Mohd. Siraj,

Umran Malik,

Arshdeep Singh.

Hitman captain. He obviously plays if he is not injured.

5 quality batsmen + Sundar, I do have faith that at least one of the top 6 batsmen can go big and score big.

5 bowlers + Pandya, again here there is various wicket taking options be it pace or spin.

KIshan our wicketkeeper, means I dont have to pick KL and it means we can leave Kohli out.

Can you guys please challenge me and or tell me a better team that India can field given the squad?

I think I have the batting order right. Mind you I loved what Hitman did vs Bangla coming late down the batting order, I would be happy for Gill and and Kishan to open and have Hitman come in before or after Pandya.

Should Chahal or Axar be in the team ahead of one of the spinners?

@express bowling@Vijy@raki05@IndianRenegade@nitinbwj

I really dont want Rohit to be there anymore for ODI or T20I. He seems to have gone down and on top of it is not fit. Virat replaces him for Senior Quota and I still trust Shami more than Arshdeep.

Shubman Gill

Ishan Kishan (wk)

Virat Kohli < I want him gone as much as anyone but I will keep him for ODI if he is in the squad. There is a chance that he plays well under pressure compared to other seniors.

Shreyas Iyer

Suryakumar Yadav

Hardik Pandya << Just make him Captain and put Rohit on Injury list.

Washington Sundar

Kuldeep Yadav

Mohammed Shami

Mohd. Siraj

Umran Malik

We retain 6 bowling options. Iyer can bowl a few if needed.

Mavi has played IPL. Has performed well in patches. Can't compare him with Mukesh who probably will never get to play a single IPL match.

SKY is the one player who can score 200 if he's set, so I do want him to get more balls.

he has bowled in the death often for both india and IPL. while he is not the best option, he is a placeholder until boom gets better

I would like this to be in one of the T20's

Ishan Kishan (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson,  Suryakumar Yadav (VC),  Hardik Pandya (C),  Rahul Tripathi, Washington Sundar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Yuzvendra Chahal,

Can switch Rahul and Sanju's position

Bumrah fit but selectors cautious, Pant sent to NCA before Australia Tests

Kohli and Rahul have been rested for T20Is, while Rohit was available only for ODIs

Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have a chat, India vs Pakistan, Men's T20 World Cup 2021, Super 12s, Dubai, October 24, 2021

While he has started batting in the nets, Rohit Sharma is expected to be fully fit by the end of the first week of January, in time for the ODI series against Sri Lanka. That made him unavailable for the T20Is starting January 3. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli have been rested after the full tour of Bangladesh. It is learnt that neither of them asked for the break, but the selectors felt they needed the rest.

Jasprit Bumrah was declared fit and was available for selection, but the selectors don't want to rush him back. They want to simulate training for him that replicates the workload of a proper match, and see how he holds up before he is brought back to international cricket.

That is also the reason why Ravindra Jadeja, who was earlier named in the squad for the Bangladesh tour, is still out of international cricket. The selectors now want to see him in match simulation just to be sure of his match fitness.

Rishabh Pant has been sent to the NCA for strength and conditioning before the Test series against Australia. The team management feels he will have a key role to play in the Tests, and needs this housekeeping break after playing 44 internationals this year. India need to win three of four Tests against Australia to qualify for the World Test Championship final.

A significant development is the promotion of Hardik Pandya to full-time vice-captain in both formats, which comes as a recognition of his leadership ability. That should also be a sign that the place of Rahul, the previous vice-captain, is not set in stone in either white-ball format.

Shikhar Dhawan has been dropped even though he captained the ODI side when the main players focused on T20Is in the last two years. In his absence in the third ODI against Bangladesh, Ishan Kishan scored a double-century. There is also Shubman Gill fighting for the opening slot. Even Pant can't be ruled out as an opener although his spot, for now, seems to be in the middle order where he scored a hundred against England three innings ago.

One big concern for India as they enter the World Cup year is the unavailability of Prasidh Krishna, who was their point of difference in the middle overs with his height, pace and hard lengths. Prasidh sustained a back injury on the eve of India A's series against New Zealand in September, and is yet to recover. That is probably why the net has been cast wider in the ODIs: Mohammed Shami is back, Arshdeep Singh is set to get a run, and Umran Malik is named in the squad as well.

Deepak Chahar is yet to recover from the injury he sustained during the Bangladesh tour, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar's name was not discussed at all, which points to his being dropped.

The selectors seem to be settling in on Yuzvendra Chahal as the sole legspinner in the white-ball squads, which is why Ravi Bishnoi has been released after spending time with the squads last year.

Shreyas Iyer and Mohammed Siraj have been given a break for the T20I series, and will be back for the ODIs.

These teams were selected by the already sacked panel of selectors as the BCCI is yet appoint the replacement panels. It is learnt that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Ashok Malhotra, Sulakshana Naik and Jatin Paranjpe has been sent all the applications, but hasn't shortlisted the candidates it wants to interview. It is expected a decision on the new panel will finally be announced in the first week of January.

Looks like Ravi Bishnoi isn't in scheme of things.  The reason why Indian Cricket can never become force. It's not about one player but their thinking. What they see in Axar is beyond my understanding. Proper left arm pie chucker who can hold a bat and won't even considered AR had he been playing for another country. Otherwise there is nothing to take out from this series. Mark my words, few failures from Ishan here and they would go crawling back to Dhawan as the world cup approaches. They will give impression on surface that they are experimenting, preparing for next ICC tournament and suddenly will go back to their regressive approach. Player like KLR has no business to wear India colours ever again after what he did in T20 wc and Bangladesh series , the garbage thinking that he possesses itself is enough to harm this team, and I'm not even talking about his mental midgetry and poor technique. Someone like him getting featured in squad of 15 and captaining the side is insult to Indian Cap and intellect of all who avidly watch this team and want them to win. Atrocious really.

Rohit is unlikely to give up his ODI slot, so he will likely be the captain for 2023 WC. That he is out of the T20 set up shows what fraud he has done in the t20 world cup.

For the T20 team, I hope Pandya and SKY are aligned on their approach. Pandya seems a take it till the end guy where as SKY is more the dont leave it till the end guy

T20 Team - Much better selection .

Positives -

  - Deadwoods out - Bhuvi, KL, Rohit & VK . Even Pant exclusion justified as of now.

  - Umran & Mavi - good exposure.

Negatives -

  - Exclusion of Patidar. Need to test him before discarding.

  - No wrist spinner in place of Yuzi.

  - Bad format selection- Mukesh Kumar  & Gill to some extent.

  - Harshal - Since next WC in WI , 50-50 selection, but should be treated as  Aar Yaa Paar matches this home season.  Doing bad here should be curtains for him.

Overall not many complaints - Pace bowling looks weak but reason for that is injuries else Mohsin, Sen , Umran & Mavi addition would have made a good selection to test new players .

From hereon need to consider Riyan Parag (in place of Hooda) , Mohsin, Patidar (MO) , Bishnoi, Kuldip Yadav ( Wristy ), Sen (Middle Phase ) for T20s.

And Shaw (if he starts piling up runs -which he is not now)

ODI-   Not much is going to change in ODI till WC end. So no expectations .

Is there a condition that vice captain needs to bowl 10 overs?

An all rounder should be bowling 10 overs in ODIs more often than not :dontknow:

Ofcourse there are occasions where all 10 overs are not required due to situations but for Pandya he would often not bowl due to fitness. He will also pick and choose games to stay fit. That was my point do we need such players as VC?

Pandya should have been the captain for T20s and we could have groom some young players as VC for ODIs to take over the reign post 2023 world cup
