No one reading this forum would be under the impression that we had one of the best test batsman on the planet in our team. The lack of respect he gets is astonishing!

this avg has mostly come at home and against some weak away opposition (barring eng). he has not opened in Aus, SA, and maybe even NZ in this period.

he has done well admittedly, but no need to hype him as one of the best test batters

In order to become GOAT he has to stop missing Test matches. Missed like 10 tests in the last few years.  Especially overseas.

Indian openers  1000 balls minimum.  Viru and Sunny are the only two legit openers that are GOATs.

shastri played in a difficult era - did very well. sindhu and gambhir were generally good too, albeit inconsistent.

Dont forget Shastri started as a tailender in the batting lineup.

yes, for a no. 10/11 it was a remarkable renaissance. I have a lot of respect for shastri the cricketer having seen him at close quarters (even met him once as a player at wankhede), but I have less respect for his bewda avatar as coach

He was amazing against England both home and away. I was looking forward to seeing him have an England like series against SA in SA, but that never materialized as he dropped out with injury.  He also dropped out against England in the reconvened final test, and that was quite a big letdown. A high batting average is great, but it masks the fact that the batsman's contribution in missed series is a big fat zero.

it's worse than a zero if it harms the team's chances.

It also gives us kela as an opener. Yea yes kela scored a fluke 100 in SA. He always has like one decent innings but he sucks for the rest of the series. Check any series abroad. Same pattern. Number 1 fraud.

Rohit did open in Australia and gave us good, solid knocks and 50+ opening partnerships which played a big role in turning around the series.. Before he joined our openers were falling like a pack of cards giving us 14-2 type starts. He has played brilliantly. Top notch in England and on turners in India scoring 30-40% of team runs on occasions. He's been truly great. India's best test batsman

he has been brilliant in india. did well in eng. that's about it - I don't rate 30s that highly. jadeja and pant have been better all-conditions batters

He should not miss a single Test match going forward. This is ridiculous missing this many matches.

He is not missing them, getting injured instead. Not his fault but that's where fans need to control their emotions and stop hyping him. As of now, he has one test match hundred away from home which is lesser than the likes of KL, Pant.
