Shreyas Iyer to have back surgery, out of IPL 2023 and WTC final

Recommended Posts

Ambati Rayudu?  Dinesh Karthik?  Deja Vu?

We know the top 3 are going to be Sharma, Gill and Kohli, so why not give Jaiswal or Gaikwad an opportunity at #4?

Added in edit:  Oh ... it's WTC.  I was thinking ODIWC.

For WTC, #4 is VK, of course.

It is Oval. Probably best suited for subcontinent batsmen. Even Mishra has an 86 there. Kumble has a 100. Stability will be missed. This is why they should have introduced Sarfraz against Australia at home.

Even now it's okay to gamble on Sarfraz. There's no point giving soft debuts to new players.

they will knock his blocks off using short pitch bowling

Sarfaraz did appear awkward against short bowling. He could be a suspect against swing too (IIRC, one of the selectors or someone similar remarked that).

I tend to take Ranji stats with a pinch of salt, preferring to see how a player tackles quality opponents in tourneys like IPL where they get to play with both Team India, top domestic (and not some random set of players), and overseas players.  Let's see how he goes!

WTC Line Up:

Rohit (C)

Gill

Pujara

Kohli

KL (WK)

R Jadeja

Axar/S Thakur

Ashwin

Umesh

Shami

Siraj/S Thakur

Six bowlers is an overkill. Play one of Ashwin/Umesh depending upon the conditions and add Sarfaraz at No 6.
