Visit Saudi?

I keep seeing the 'Visit Saudi' ads plastered on the hoardings on the boundary and on the screen/ laser hoardings.

Why would anyone visit Saudi ( other than of course for Haj/Umrah)? Is it even a touristy/ tourist friendly place?

Should there be a 'Visit Shirdi' ad also, so that the majority community doesn't feel discriminated against?

Discuss.

I am not sure if "Visit Saudi" has got much to do with Haj, which indirectly could have played a part in motivating Saudi to promote its tourism industry.

Saudi may be wanting to get a pie of the tourists visiting MENA countries such as Egypt, Israel, UAE, etc.

MBS has transformed that place to a large extent. Was there in Oct last year for 2 weeks, it has changed a lot in comparison to 2014.

Apparently, it is very good now with MBS removing a lot of restrictions. You still need to make sure you don't "hurt the sentiments" of the peacefuls, but at least now Women can drive, and there are movie theaters

I geddit that it has been terraformed by MBS and all that.

But my question still remains: Would someone want to go there as a tourist for non work non religious purposes?

Probably not an average person, unless you have friends or relatives there.

I plan to go to Saudi sometime. My wife grew up there, lived in Jeddah and Riyadh for 14 years and wants to revive her childhood memories

Egypt, why even Petra has more on offer from an archaeological standpoint than SA at the moment.

That rules out many "archaeo-tourists".

From an entertainment/shopaholic standpoint, maybe there will be some takers. But would that exceed the current throng who frequent the Shopping festivals etc; is debatable. MBS is trying to diversify revenue streams (understandably) but it feels like build it and they will come. The lamp is flickering brighter but is it at its brightest yet ?
