But that is on Rohit Sharma and Dravid completely.

They already knew that WTC would be played in England conditions a long time back.

All they needed to do was either put a seaming all-rounder like Pandya, Venkatesh Iyer etc. and give them enough time to be ready for these conditions OR have a Left arm fast bowler ready to create variety.

If they had so much faith in Unadkat he should have been picked instead of Umesh. Why is he protected on do or die matches?

It's basic sports logic - you have horses for courses and have backups.

we already had a seaming alrounder in Shardul and selection is done by selectors. blame lies on them.

We did bat first in last WTC. what was the result? it is better to except that we are not good enough and not the best test team currently. we are not ready enough to win a one-off test in SENA conditions.

Last time was NZ not in England for a month before the game?

so? it does not even matter. Playing in England for them is very much like playing in NZ. completely opposite for Indian team.

Ashwin did well, much better than Bumrah and Ishant

I am 100% sure they wont even play him in the WC.they will have him in the squad as a token but will play Axar over him.

Ashwin's time in ODIs was long gone. It was bizarre they picked him for world T20 where leggies thrive. Kuldeep is a legit choice. But we all  know collar chewer.will make a last minute entry.

fact that its the fast bowlers that will win us matches in SENA no matter how many spinners you play. you can play 5 spinners as you deem fit. playing two spinners is of no use. it is the 4 seamer strategy that has started to yield results for us overseas. Otherwise in all those years we used to play two spinners. At times, we even only played two seamers with two spinners. The quickly we understand it the better it is. Second spinner is a luxury we cannot afford in these conditions.  Ashwin despite playing 24 tests in Sena has 0 fifer and averages 41. Not all seamers may not click in a match but that extra 4th seamer provides us that option that if in case a seamer has an off day, that 4th seamer can make an impact and the captain wont feel handicap.  identify and play better seamers. just because Umesh Yadav failed as his selection was a bad decision from the start does not mean we let go of our strategy of playing 4 seamers in SENA.

Yes, fast bowlers are supposed to work as a group. The team does not know which among the 4 would do well and not do much like a team plays 5-7 batsmen not knowing which ones would click.

After the game w/ the benefit of scorecard accounting, it is easy to say if X had played as he may not have scored or picked up this or that but …

Thakur will play ahead of Umesh or Unadkat is basic cricketing sense.

But I guess the labels are important.

Same reason why they are opposing 2 spinners.

Jaddu did as well or better than Green as a bowler but we had no Lyon for us.

But since he is a spinner....we should have a pacer to maintain the 4+1 ratio.

No wonder this 4 pacer koolaid took off.

Its strange to see you still harping on about this.
The 4 pacer strategy is exactly what we need in SENA(except some places in AUS), Ashwin doesn't win matches in Eng,Sa,Nz. How many more chances are we going to give him?
Bcoz of the 4 pacer strategy by the GOAT ASIAN TEST CAPTAIN, we were finally able to lead Eng by 2-1, again In Sa when we chose Ashwin he failed us yet again.

You still don't understand. Are you really this thick pr just pretending to be thic. Shardul would never play as a third seamer. If not Umesh, Unadkat would have played but not Shardula as third seamer. Shardul only played because they wanted a fourth seamer. Even Umesh is a swing bowler and Shardul himself is washed up with that dibbly dobbly stuff he bowled in this test. He now is a better batsman than a bowler.

This.
Why do people not understand that Thakur can never be a third seamer.
He was picked in place of Ashwin, there was no competition for a spot between Ashwin and Umesh, it was always Thakur vs Ashwin. How hard is this to understand?

Not rooting for Ashwin here but given that Bumrah was absent and Umesh has never really succeeded overseas, a case can be made for going back to two spinners because out of the 4 pacers we have, two of them reduce the overall quality of attack.

If you have three quality pacers, 4th can play the support act. But with two quality pacers, we are living on a thin line as other three aren't necessarily reliably wicket takers.

The only problem here is that Umesh managed to fool the team management and everyone around that with his odd performances on Oval that he is a good serviceable bowler and can form a potent attack with Shami and Siraj.

Umesh averaged 23 with the ball in England so it was definitely not a poor selection by any means. He did well last time he played in England.
If I had to pick one bowler out of Ashwin and Umesh for a bowler's spot I would definitely prefer Umesh and there are many who would do the same, it's not as heinous a crime as people are making it to be, the only problem is that we never played a practice match and had no time before the finals, Umesh would have done well if he had some time.
Both Shami and Umesh need to be phased out now but the problem is that our new pacers are made of glass and are usually not available for tours.

If I have to pick one between Ashwin and Umesh for England conditions, I would prefer to have neither of the two. Maybe Ashwin now after WTC Final because he will give us some useful runs with bat and will keep trying different tricks with bowl which will make everyone interested in the game.

But I do agree that inclusion of Ashwin instead of Umesh won't have made much difference in the result anyways.

Don't mind the above posts, selectors like many here are ignoring, they just read stats, don't give two hoots whom against the bowler was bolwing, opposition etc

Umesh was never ever reliable plus his bowling last time backed his case against a near pathetic England lineup in2021(preBazball)

Look, being the Dukes ,they had a feeling Umesh can come into picture with his reverse swings, that was the case with Shami as well

Australia batting>>England2021

True Umesh wasn't contesting Ashwin

Umesh was competing Undadkat

Ashwin as a package with everything in mind like super pathetic top to middle batting line-up can't afford his omission

And the best part, they neither form a near decent fast bowling attack

If you have live grass Umessh should be the last option. I remember against Bangladesh defending 105 on a grassy pitch  Binny took 6 for 4 and Mohit sharma took 4 wickets. Umesh went for 32 runs in 5 overs. Bowled utter tripe on that pitch.
