Just look around the guys who are tried as openers, no.3. Pitiful. Cam Green batting at 3 for Australia. Smith tried opening. Everyone is experimenting.None of them have a defensive technique like this guy has. But a big but if he gets in against brand new cherry and gets out call for his head will be immediate.

For a guy who is partially deaf, which can potentially cause balance issues, he was remarkable with calling between the wickets today.  I get mad if one side of my earphone doesn't work. Imagine this guy has to live like that whole life. Deserves sound backing. No pun intended.

Really wish we had sent him up the order in Lord's 4th innings. His game is built for attrition, soaking pressure. #8 is the wrong place to keep him, at least now hope TM corrects course.

Part of the reason for the underwhelming number of tests he has played is his fragile body. Dude got injured more often than Kohli edging it to the slips. You get injured, you go off the radar, unless you are an established player. But now that he has proved(again) how clutch he is, let's hope he has a good, injury free run hereon.

Yeah, he brings calmness and stability. Pant at 5 gives a feeling that fireworks will be followed by a collapse very soon.

People forget so easily his clutch performances starting with his debut and into the next home series. His Gabba 22 (or 26?), which featured the audacious pull for 6 against Cummins, was more valuable than most centuries. And then the 96* and 85. Then the injuries hit - out of sight out of mind. 

 

Just okay SR in IPL and T20Is. So people see that and extrapolate to tests. Format illiteracy.

I think long term number 5 makes sense.

 

Let him focus on his bowling as well. Should be averaging sub 30 over a long run with the ball. Else its Irfan Pathan all over again.

I think Washy has the potential to be a genuine allrounder, a performer with both bat and ball.

Though at the moment his batting is his stronger suit, but the way his bowling is improving after each passing day...he can be a 25-27 avging spinner for us. Combine with his ability to bat at no 8, he can be a good allrounder.

 

Although, I dont want to consider him as a no 5/6 batter yet, we dont need to put extra pressure on him. Let him gain experience of 25-30 matches first, settle himself down and then we will see where it goes.

 

Once Jadeja retires, we have to see who his replacement is. If it's someone like Sai Kishore or Manav Suthat who are primarily a bowler with little ability to bat, then Washy can move up the order. If we choose someone like Nishant Sindhu whose stronger suit is his batting, it make sense to have Washy continue at no 8.

The reason people want hi above 7 is because his batting potential is wasted. He is not one of those guys who would suddenly make a 20 ball 50 because there are tailenders to bat with. When you bat at 8 you are more likely to bati with tailenders than top order batsman. So you end up only getting 20 to 30% ouf ot his maximum capacity.
