Was Kohli's approach after 30th over justified in semi-final?

Recommended Posts

Normally I'm critical of Kohli but I think his innings yesterday and in the WC so far has been fine.

Semi-final pressure can do things to you and it was important he be there till as late as possible to allow others around him to bat freely.

If he got out in the 35th over trying to accelerate the pressure might have got to others and we wouldn't have reached the score that we did.  Obviously we can also say we may have scored even higher but it was a very good total in the end.

It is him at the other end that allows Iyer/SKY etc. to go for their shots, else they wouldn't play so attacking.

You can't continue to anchor for fifty overs. So better hit out or get out if you can't do that. Kohli throughout this WC has batted selfishly with a single aim of completing his hundred.

He didnt anchor for 50 he anchored for 43 or so which was right... can not hit or get out in over number 30... even with 9 wickets in hand that is too early, especially given that was what Iyer was tasked with doing- and did so brilliantly.

I was critical of Virat in group stages when trying to go a for a 100, and maybe there is a valid criticism for yesterday too, but the role clarity is clear and he did it to perfection.

He has definitely been playing selfishly this World Cup. There was no need to anchor post 35th over when he literally walked from 80 to 100. Tendulkar has also played selfishly in the past but not to this extent in World Cups.

Thank god for Rohit and the way he’s played; he could have easily helped himself to many

100s if he wanted by playing like Kohli.

No Rohit would not have helped himself for  many 100s even if he wanted too.

Rohit these days does not have ability to bat deep. Terming that as unselfish on his part is ridiculous.

What was he doing when he needed to give fast starts in t20 World Cup.

Kohli similarly does not have ability to accelerate after he gets set. They both are playing within their limitations. It is working for the team.

We often forget one thing..depreciation as innings goes on..you feel tired.. concentration wavers..ball becomes old..so even for the fittest players like kohli that happens.. see Iyer he smashed everything ..played 66 balls but even he was tiring and the shot he got out to was a tired shot.. think about mitchell.. 200 odd left in 20 overs in this flat pitch.. mitchell in prime hitting.. but as time went on he got tired and had cramps.. so dont consider Kohli s innings from 30th over as a fresh start..consider it including the above mentioned variables in that humid weather,,

Yes this tiredness as innings went on was very visible yesterday especially as he took 16 balls to go from 89 to 100 in singles and 1 double. Just after the 100 the tiredness went away and he suddenly played 2 lofted shots, one of which was a six and one where he got out.

Jeez people need to stop justifying everything Kohli doss. He is the Goat ODI bat but he cares about milestones which is OK but so far this Wc he has gone out of his way for them. As long as it doesn't cost the team it's ok but India left at least 10-15 runs there last time. Hopefully it won't bite us vs Aus.

He has already assumed that if Kohli didn't bat through others wouldn't have been able to hold the fort.

Gill, KL, Iyer, Jadeja - all are in form batsmen.

In-form does not count on knock outs. Can't compare ind vs pak batting line up, pak was 150/2 in 30 overs in league match against ind. After Babar got out, PAK was bundled for 192.

Kohli has an attacking game if the situation demands. He is playing % cricket , less risk. He scored 700+ runs consistently . Why should he bat like Ayyar ?

Did not kohli take india home in first league match against AUS, league match against NZ? if kohli too plays attackingzy, we would be like England (bazball) approach where there is a collapse awaiting . I am not undermining rohits contribution who is reminding me of 1996 jayasuriya. Some one needs to bat through otherwise less inexperienced Indian middle order may be exposed.

In today's cricket 100 ball 100 has no meaning, he clearly played for his 100s.

But looks like this a template Ind is following they need some1 to anchor the innings through. Ind is still batting only till no. 7 and no.7 is Jadeja plus number 6 is Sky who is not scoring that many runs and that SR.

Aus will come really strong, they will put everything into it in Finals. Ind batter have to be resolute, plus bowler should not get carried away. Aus - They have been there and done it before and knows how to do it.

Aus struggled to chase 212. If a batter scores run a ball 100, he is adding partnerships of worth 150-200 with other batters. Imagine Kane Williamson scoring 100 off 100 in semis, that would have meant NZ would have batted till 40 overs with 2 wickets lost and it would have been 100 off last 10 overs which would have tilted the match in NZ's favor.

Kohli scored 26 off 8 in t20 in a once in life time. it's not that he can't, he prefers to bat deep/anchor. if ever one hits aggressively., we are playing ENG way and we know what happened to the ballbaz style of cricket.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Im sure SRT only batted selfish as he approached his 100 like from about 80 onwards, whereas Kohli played selfish from the start?

Is this correct?

Kohli had surpassed expectations, people were saying even a 80 percent strikes is okay but he has to stay till the end. May be that's his roles assigned by chanakya sharma, he knows better.

I get the feeling he is playing a team role by anchoring one side, we will only know post WC.

Watched Ian Chappells show prior to world cup . He says unless Kohli builds and anchors, india has a chance of collapse with long tail .

So I think kohli is the glue and his batting presence rubs on to the other folks like shreyas and KL rahul
