Takeaways from this IPL

Final yet to be played and season all but over, what are icf's thoughts on this ipl season and how will you remember it?

For me this was a missed opportunity from the POV of developing young Indian fast bowlers and giving them a chance, Mayank Yadav feels such a long time ago and Umran and Tyagi barely got any chances.

OTOH it felt like a season where bat dominated for large parts and some mammoth scores were regularly posted in the first month which meant that it gave us some good batting/ batting all rounder talents who might be an important part of our future white ball plans. SRH and KKR standouts in this regard with good individual performances from Shashank, Ashutosh, Parag, Samson etc. OTOH the season felt too long because of lack of double headers on Saturdays. Overall i felt that the quality of cricket was satisfactory and MI and RCB's situation provided some - what some may say scripted :phehe:- soap opera style drama.

For me the only silver light were Harshit Rana, Abhishek, Parag & fitter version of Pant.

Jaiswal, Jurel has come from strong performances on the big stage, so even a mediocre performance in this IPL doesn't worry me much.

But this IPL have shown the "impact" of one player in T20's. How one extra player in form of Ashutosh made the whole PBKS team exciting to watch, while on the other spectrum we have KL who single handedly brought the whole team's energy level down.

I would also callout the poor team selection blunders of GT openly, they simply looked like a mis managed side right from game 3 onwards and never recovered from their poor selections.

Abhishek Sharma and Riyan Parag are the major takeaways.

In bowling department, Harshit Rana has shown some potential. But outside that, it hasn't been a good season for bowlers.

Dube and V Iyer are middling players who if forced to take their bowling seriously, can be options for future. Otherwise, they won't be able to replace Hardik. That's a bitter truth.

All in all, the problem of batters who can't bowl is not necessarily a problem unless the captains and coaches themselves devalue this. A great captain is the one who uses his resources to maximum potential so you can use Abhishek/Parag in top 6 and have only one of Hardik or Jadeja at #7 depending on the conditions in which the match has to be played.

Agree with the length of this IPL. Also its clear now that a contest between bat and ball has been completely eradicated now. It was never there in the first place but its becoming extinct to the point that teams are bowling wide of the batsmen to prevent the batsmen from scoring. Wides being challenged is just :facepalm:It also tells there is no improvement in the mindset of the established Indian batters. Kela's and rat's 120 sr is from 15 years ago when the IPL started. Head's innings is the norm these days. Number of 100s being scored in t20s is unthinkable. Other things being boundaries being shortened with increased bat quality. Hitting sixes have been trivialized just like WPL. I'm sure @New guy is thrilled about it since that "proves" women's cricket is just as exciting as that of men's.

The biggest is that T20s are becoming what they were meant to be.

It is a fully grown format now. We will see different pools for ODIs and T20s now. They will require entirely different skillset in future.

Batsmen always had strokes, what's stopping them was the efficiency, i.e, how long can you keep executing your shots without getting out. Bowlers will evolve, they will make a comeback and we will se normal scores returning soon. But that won't last. Just like batsmen have learned to hit Hard lengths, slower balls, cutters, Quick wrist spin, they will find a way to hit everything the bowlers try. The batsmen who won't adapt will be eradicated. Padikkal and Sudarshan will probably be the last two sheet anchors to have played as many matches.

Batsmen are now having 400+ run seasons at 180+ strike rate which happened only once in first fifteen years. And chasing 200 no longer excites. The future is just unimaginable.

And it makes sense.

Cricket purists can watch Test cricket.

ODI provides a balance between entertainment and keeps something for bowlers.

Standardized pitches are necessary to keep the idea of T20s relevant.

The key takeaway is that performances don't matter for Indian team selection. It's a joke that there's no player selected in the WT20 squad from the two teams who made the finals. It's clear as day our best bowling lineup is a combination of SRH and KKR plus Bumrah, i.e. Bumrah, Harshit, Nattu/Bhuvi, Varun C. But we'll get to see likes of Siraj, Chahal, Jadeja etc. once again.

what you expect Bhuvi, Natthu, Unadkat, Shabaz, etc to be in Indian 11! Also Kuldeep is better than Varun C.

I expect a bowling lineup of Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Nattu, Varun C to be a much better than the one we're carrying right now.

If this IPL was an email, I'd ask for TLDR.

It was quite terrible. I'd hardly consider it "cricket"

- Kiddie boundaries. I'm pretty sure that, I played on larger boundaries during highschool.

- Absolutely nothing for bowlers. You had to be Bumrah level bowler to save some shame.

- Fielding ... laugh worthy

- Commentary... yuck. It was so bad that I found Nassir Hussain and Urooj Mumtaz to be refreshing during Pak vs England yesterday.

- Fans were cringeworthy. Amount of hero worshiping was quite nauseating. I hope the world doesn't have to witness the Dhoni saga any longer.

- Did I say... Too Long Didn't Read?

Look out for clutch players and not hype those who usually do well in low pressure league games.

Who do you think is clutch or looked clutch purely in this format this season?

Abhishek for all his explosiveness upfront, failed in all these KOs with the bat

That bothered me a bit

From the top of the mind recall:

RR: Jaiswal and Parag.
KKR: V Iyer

RCB: Patidar (stepped up in RCB’s must win league game(s))
