a white briton female has beaten the ethiopians and kenyans to win gold in 800m... dominant countries can be beaten if the right people are trained in the right way

There is something called self belief also and that has to come from within no can teach you. If you look at last two matches from Sen, he was leading in all games he lost.Major things for him to improve in future are his conditioning and self belief. Both have to come from the player himself.

Only Indians will remember some of those for sentimental values. Otherwise, from Olympics perspective, whether you finish 4th or last, it's not a medal and doesn't really count for anything.

As if we have droves of medals like other top countries to not lament on lost opportunities. Captain Obvious!! Keep your snarky snide remarks to yourself. We are like this only. Still remember a lot of close finishes.

Olympics should be enjoyed much like how we enjoy Soccer, Tennis. Yea we don't have super stars from our country representing those sports. Yet we enjoy. I used to be a big formula 1 fan.  We just have to enjoy the performance of world class athletes. Sure if Indai win let us celebrate. But if they lose let us not act like it is end of the world. We are way way way behind in many countries when it comes to olympics.  This is our rankings each year in olympics

We are kind of between the chinese/japanese/koreans and the africans/caucasians.

Stronger than one but not the other, quicker than one but not the other.

However once we did not even have the chance of a medal. As people have noted only thing we had was Milkha 4th, PT Usha 4th and Hockey (in the past).

Now we have a few medals and a bunch of 4ths.

We need one more push and the bronzes become golds and the 4ths become bronzes and silvers..... It will happen in 10 or 15 more years.

Patience - Rome was not built in a day.

It is not mutually exclusive. Of course, other countries excelling in sports that India is not even competitive,  can be enjoyed like the 100 m final etc. But, that does not mean we should not cry over lost opportunities . It still hurts

Won't help. They send the best people available in India. If they don't do well there is not a lot we can do. It comes once every 4 years. There are unfortunate scenarios where you depend on refereees. But sports like badminon wher you can register outright win  we should just work harder and get better.

Of course, it is much better now post 1996, we are regularly featured on the medals tally , single digit notwithstanding!

What does rich have to do with connecting people in all walks of life to athletics? Does the daughter of a construction worker with high athletic promise have access to world class facilities, equipment and nutrition? Can she afford to lead a life as a promising athlete? Would she even get discovered?

A country can be top heavy "rich", which is unfortunately, what India currently is.

-------------------

South Korea's GDP in 1976 was 3250USD and 8200USD in 1988 per capita (not adjusted for inflation)

China's GDP in 2008 was 5000USD per capita (not adjusted for capita)

Where are you getting this figures?

These figures are completely false.

Here are World Bank figures.

Korea GDP pci in 1988 was $4748.6 with HDI of 0.72. In 1976 their GDP pci was $834

China GDP pci in 2008 was $3468.3 with HDI of 0.672

https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.PCAP.CD?locations=KR-CN

India's HDI right now is 0.644 with $2731 pci.

India should be at $4500-5000 pci (non inflation adjusted) with 0.7-0.73 HDI by 2036

These countries were as rich as India will be in 2036 when they hosted their Olympics and even they had those issues which you listed 12 years before they hosted the Olympics.

ALL countries become top heavy "rich" before becoming more equal. That's ECONOMICs. Someone has to get rich before everyone does. All the Asian countries which grew rich super fast had this issue.

India has a lower GINI coefficient than China or Japn (or even the US).
