Sir Clive Lloyd urges ICC to solve 'financial inequality' in global revenue distribution

Sir Clive Lloyd has called for course correction in the global revenue distribution model and wanted the issue of financial inequality addressed. While receiving the Order of the Caribbean Community (OCC), the highest honour of the Caribbean region recently in Grenada, Lloyd 'demanded that the International Cricket Council (ICC) make redress to the West Indies for what he deems to be financial inequity.'

Addressing the vexing issue of the revenue distribution model, Lloyd reminded the world cricket community that when the West Indies team was at its zenith, there was no financial reward for the regional board. "Now that the global game is on a sounder fiscal footing, he argued, it is time for the Windies to get their fair share," Barbados Today reported.

"Over the years in our ascendancy we did not ask for any extra money. But now I'm told when they have distribution of funds at the ICC, England receives $180 million, Australia $180 million, India $180 million, and we are $80 million. I want to know, where do they get this disparity?

The ICC revenue distribution system was reorganized in 2015, with shares allocated to boards based on the contribution to ICC revenue from their countries. Approximately 90 percent of the revenue is generated from India, and the BCCI receives about 39 percent of the ICC's income.

"Because when we were leading, everybody wanted to play - we were playing two tours in the winter. We were the cash cow for these guys. But now that we might be a little down in the dumps, nobody now is saying, well you know West Indies do need some help.

"And I think that it's about time that our board men make a special call to the ICC. Send 10 or 12 people who we know have the pull, and that extra that is needed, to tell them that we need some special dispensation," Lloyd was quoted as saying by Barbados Today, which went on to add, "Sir Clive pointed out that the financial imbalance has always been there, even when West Indies were winning, but that it is worse now that more money is coming into cricket."

Australia and England should not be getting the same as India.

these bastards were cashing  in from WI  in 1980s and now they are cashing in from India.

There is no big three, it is India then everyone else.

Tests are still well attended in both countries and players can sustain themselves without having to play in leagues in these 2 countries I guess that's why.

Their Tests are well attended but those are not generating  revenues for ICC.

ICC  if I am not wrong is distributing money from ICC events. Why are they getting same money as India.

Clive Lloyd point is much more applicable to these two boards, WI was playing much more frequently both home and away to England or Australia during their heyday but now India has replaced them.

India earns 90% of the revenue and gets same as Aus and Eng.

This is ludicrous.

And SA and the WI deserve more revenues for the high quality of cricket they provide now or provided earlierer in case of the WI.  This is relevant as high quality cricket is what generates revenues.

Obviously, he would want more revenues for WI for the sport to remain relevant in the Caribbean.

India should field two teams and therefore create more stake in revenues.

I have said this before: Current generation only knows Gayle, Bravos of the world who are colorful characters and friendly.

Similarly my generation respected gentlemen like Walsh-Ambrose.

Lara was outspoken and  came off little arrogant but because of the mutual respect he had for Sachin, you will notice most hardcore Sachin Bhakts are even huge fans of Lara and he is maybe 1.5 not even 2nd fav for many.

However I have heard stories from previous generations how racist the WI team of the 70s and 80s were towards Indians. You can still see that animosity from Michael Holding, Lloyd etc. They probably respected Gavaskar just like maybe Indian team respects Sikandar Raza or Shakib in the context of their teams.

I think there is a lot of animosity  among blacks and Indian origin folk in WI too.

Sir Sobers and Viv are exceptions but that’s probably they got a lot of non-platonic  “love” from India.

Lloyd or Holding might not have given the same respect to Indian team  as other teams were much more competitive against them.WI used to have long tours even when they were beating the crap out of Indian teams.

Holding comes across as jealous kind like Pakistanis. I get a feeling of uncle tom from him Lloyd not so much.

What kind of revenue does WICB earn from releasing their players for IPL? It used to be quite a substantial amount from what I remember reading and was something they depended on. Unlike other countries which are not part of big 3 there are big logistical costs in conducting domestic cricket matches in the Caribbean which is why we see calls for equitable distribution the most from them.

Spot on! We've seen how condescending WI players were towards India and Indian team & players. I recall likes of Lloyd and old WI players ruling against India time and again as match referees. Michael Holding was always bitter and any Indian success rankled him. I don't know whether it was the 1983 loss to India but that generation of West Indies has been extremely bitter and jealous about India.

And it's just not the players. Cricket writers, authors, commies, and that generation in general has the same attitude about India. And we see that same bias whenever Bucknor was umpiring. Now the shoe is on the other foot we see all the phuckn racists change their tunes and come out groveling. But Indian cricket is not a charity. We struggled to reach this point and I don't recall anyone lending us a helping hand when we struggled.

Ahhh these figures are completely wrong. And no ca and exb do not run shite.

Do not run circles.

India gets like 231 mil per year. From icf

Ca gets only 37 mil

And England 40 mil

Nonsense figures

And sorry keep begging. Make your own money * off.

Wth. India earned this through.

Who cares about them. And these figures are completely wrong. Ecb don't get anywhere near bcci from icc

It's 231 mil for India

And only 40 for ecb

And don't forget that does not even include bccis actual overall revenue from other sources which probably amounts close to a billion.

Posted

None of the boards are close to bcci in terms of revenue. And no gollum they aren't running circles at all. But where ecb dominates is the processes. They set up the structure and the rules of the game. They also have measures in place to make changes with the help of new technology if applicable. Ecb are the innovative bunch that make new inventions.

Bcci'a advantage was the creation of IPL or t20 format in general. That was their launchpad to success.
