3pm: The day 2 of the one-off Test has been called off. The outfield was never deemed fit to play despite several attempts to dry to surface. The groundstaff had cut a portion of the grass from the net-practice area, and had brought that onto the ground. Many electrical fans were brought in and kept face-down to dry the spot. But the umpires still felt the surface was not safe enough to play. Like day one, there was not even a drop of rain during the day but the city witnessed some overnight downpour. We have to wait for another day for the Test to begin, which is, understandably, quite frustrating for the teams having lost two entire days. The New Zealand players reached the ground only 1pm and had a practice session but that's all they could do on Tuesday.

Caterer uses water from washroom to clean utensils at Greater Noida stadium

The Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Chosen to host the historic one-off Test between Afghanistan and New Zealand, the cricket venue was scrutinsed over substandard infrastructure after rain washed out the opening day of the Test on Monday. On Tuesday, photos of unhygienic conditions on the ground raised more questions.

It has come to light that members of the catering team at the venue were washing utensils in a washroom. India Today accessed photos of a member of the catering team washing a bowl in the washroom, near the urinal, on Tuesday. The absence of modern facilities at the venue caused operational hindrances. The media at the venue lacked proper seating on the opening day and even water and washroom facilities were substandard.

Notably, play was washed out on Day 1 of the one-off Test due to a wet outfield. Overnight rain led to more damp areas on the outfield and the start of play was delayed until 3 pm IST on Tuesday. The woeful drainage and the lack of preparedness for rain have left the one-off Test in a state of limbo.

For those of you wondering, why was Afghanistan allotted Greater Noida as the venue for the Test match vs New Zealand, the cat is finally of the bag. Now, it turns out that Afghanistan had themselves shortlisted the Greater Noida, out of the available options, that included Kanpur, and Bengaluru as well. In an interaction with SportStar, ACB official Mehnazuddin Raz spoke about the entire controversy surrounding the AFG vs NZ match.

Raz said, “Kanpur, Bengaluru and Greater Noida were the three venues offered by the BCCI, and we chose Greater Noida because it’s closer to Delhi and connectivity from Kabul is better.” He added, “This was the best venue for us in terms of logistics, and that’s why Greater Noida was chosen.”

Still doesn't justify poor facilities.

 

Greater Noida was one of 3 options which means all 3 were deemed fit and capable of hosting a test match.

 

After that Afg just had to decide as per their convenience.

This is a one off test. Not part of the WTC.

Realistically NZ ain't making it. 1-1 series draw in BD, whitewash at home against Aussies...damage done. 

 

Have series in India and Lanka which they must win (both), home series against Eng again which they must win, then they have a small opening. 

 

Got lucky that RSA sent a 3rd string squad to tour them because of clash with RSA's T20 league. 

 

Even in 2021, they wouldn't have made the final had they toured BD, even a draw in one of the tests there would have meant India vs Aus final. They smartly used the covid excuse to stay ahead of Aussies in the WTC table.

Normally all the teams in WTC need to play a minimum of 2 test matches for every series. Even though Afghanistan is a test playing nation they are not included in WTC cycle because they don't play many test matches. Same with Ireland too I guess.

Absolutely embarassing stuff...washing utensils in toilet. I was watching sports tak and one of the anchor was aparently peeing next to where utensils were getting cleaned. Disgusting stuff

 

India need to take hygine very seriously. Forget Afghanistan, imagine what NZ players may be thinking. They live in one of the most beautiful, clean and non-polluted country in the world.
