Six-month recovery time: Green opts for back surgery, will miss India series

Cameron Green will miss this summer’s India clash after choosing to have back surgery rather than managing the stress fracture troubles that have limited his bowling output in both international and franchise cricket.

 

All-rounder Green was briefed on the surgical option, to be performed in New Zealand, by Cricket Australia medical staff on Thursday afternoon and took time at the weekend with those close to him before choosing to go under the knife.

 

“Whilst spine stress fractures are not unusual in pace bowlers, Cam has a unique defect in an adjacent area to the fracture that is believed to be contributing to the injury,” a CA spokesperson said. “After thorough consultation it was determined Cameron would benefit from the surgery to stabilise the defect and reduce the risk of future recurrence.

 

“The surgery has been performed successfully with elite pace bowlers in the past. Recovery time is anticipated to be around six-months. The decision to proceed to surgery is with Cameron’s long-term future as an all-rounder in mind.”

 

Recovery times vary for a procedure previously performed on the likes of James Pattinson, Shane Bond, Lockie Ferguson and Jason Behrendorff, but there is no chance of Green appearing in a Test match on home soil before next summer’s Ashes series.

 

So far in his international career, Green has been a batting all-rounder with his bowling loads carefully managed due to historical back issues – he suffered multiple stress fractures in his early days in junior and state ranks when he was primarily a bowler.

 

Scans had cleared Green of any back trouble in mid-year, but he complained of discomfort after an ODI against England in Durham where he bowled six overs of largely short-pitched deliveries as Australia chased a series-sealing win.

Further scans in London showed signs of a stress fracture, and Green took the next plane home to Perth as CA medical staff weighed up his options.

 

Had he chosen not to have surgery, Green would have been available for at least some of the India series. This was a scenario discussed by the Australian selectors last week, before Green began to lean towards a procedure which, while not risk-free, offers him a chance to bowl far more overs in future.

 

 

Australia’s selectors are due to name squads for the ODI series against Pakistan and Australia A games against India A later on Monday.

So who is the opener for Aus? Will smith drop back to no-4 ? 

 

If Mitchell Marsh cannot bowl, then Aus have a big problem with ageing Lyon, Starc

Sam Konstas the 19 Year old part of U19 winning team is selected for first 2 India A games.  He has been in stellar form in Shield cricket first phase.

 

Konstas Harris and Bancroft all three are part of A series.

Let's see... I reckon Konstas may be opening with Khawaja.

no need to feel sorry for Australia. we have our own bowler problems with only 2 good bowlers,out of form Siraj plus injured Shami and injured Krishna.i don't even know who our backups are now.

what this means is that Aus have incentive to make the tracks for the series that much more bowler friendly.

 

5 test series.  And we pretty much know this team will face each other in the WTC final.  They can't risk running their bowling "tri-murti" into the ground.

Prasidh Krishna injured is a blessing. We all saw what he did on those tailor made pitches for fast bowlers in SA. He was getting hammered on those pitches where the matches finished in 2-3 days. Mukesh would be a better option than him.

at this point i would really hope Harshit Rana somehow come good(maybe in the practice games in Aussie land),those pitches are tailor made for him.

That's our pace bowling depth chart at the moment for Tests. In ODIs we may also add others such as Khaleel or Mohsin Khan. Likes of Prasidh Krishna are nowhere on the list.

bowling tracks may be a lottery.. If India is 1-1 after first 3 tests, I expect us to win the series.

historically we've been pretty bad at the first test of the series, especially on away tours.  Want that pattern to stop.

Because we're playing more tests than anyone not named Eng in Oz—16 tests since 2011 as opposed to 12 tests for Oz in India! We should really stop touring them this regularly; * the CA or ECB, let our chumps statpad against SL/WI or Bangers a bit more :hitler:

Every WTC cycle each of the big 3 plays the other two (one home - one away) in a 5 match series.

 

Therefore for the others it takes time to play the big 3.

 

Example SA haven't toured here since 2019 nor WI since 2018. We haven't been to SL since 2017.

 

Pak are going to England in 2026, 6 years later than their last.

 

SL haven't been to Aus since 2018.

 

Eng/Aus hasn't toured Bang since 2017.
