Only Jaiswal & Pant average over 40, a sad indictment on the legacy of Indian Batsmen.

Take out England series and then put the averages of Indian batsmen and  Other teams averages.

England series  were played on  flat pitches where guys like Pujara would have scored 500 plus easily even on his last legs.

Guy like Steve Smith has averaged 37 against India  from 2020

When you play on Bunsen burners like the series against England in 2021 where Joe Root is capable of picking 5 wickets for nothing or on seaming pitches of SA where 200 is great score. What do you expect.

1. Pant

2. Rohit

3. Jadeja

4. Rahul

5. Kohli

Then rest. Jaiswal not considered since he hasn’t completed one full cycle. Kohli’s stats are boosted by 176 he got vs Aus at home on a 600+ pitch.

Even taking that into account, you can see these batsmen have been garbage.

A simple exercise to find out:

Remove the contribution of Axar, Jaddu and Ash with the bat. Add tailender runs to their name.

What would be the result?

- Home series loss to Aus in 2023

- Drawn Bangladesh series 2023

- Messy home series vs Eng 2024 (Jurel and *Kuldeep* won us a practically lost game)

- Even Aus 2020 series win was possible due to lower order resistance. Or else it would have been a thrashing.

- Eng 2021 home series would have been messy too

- Got thrashed in SA 2022 (tho our pacers also had a major role to play in that mess)

- In 2023/24 SA series, we escaped with a 1-1 draw cos SA collapsed in the first innings just like India did. Or else it was an easy whitewash.

Since 2019, These batsmen have been useless.

- Kohli had a dream run in SA 2018, Eng 2018.

- Pujara was in God mode in Aus 2018 and in Gritty mode in Aus 2020.

- Pant was in God mode in Aus 2020 in the last 2 tests. Gill great support.

Apart from Pant & Jaiswal (recent times) - our batsmen have been an utter and complete embarassment.

You can take out drawn test against Australia as well. Flattest pitch in the last 5 years.

We all know (bar one poster) that it's batsmen who've been the problem for a long time. It's the lower order and bowlers who've been cleaning up the batsmen's mess for ages. Be it shorter formats or Tests, one thing is common - batsmen are bound to fail and never show up when it matters, and bowlers get the blame despite carrying this seniority quota ridden team forever.

This before the start of England series. Other than Pant none of them stand out. But when you compare with players batsmen who have played  against India none of them other than Root who has owned Indian bowlers even  in juicy swinging and seaming conditions where our genius bowlers could not defend 376  stand out.

The batsmen who stunk like Pujara and Rahane are out of the team and but like you said did play vital roles in winning two Australian series but are out of the team now.

Both Pujara and Rahane did provide a good enough total for bowlers to defend in SA which bowlers flopped big time.

Guy like Dean Elgar avg over 54 in those conditions is testment of bowlers failing to do their job rather than batsmen flopping.Tembe Bavuma and Petersen also were having great time facing Indian fast bowlers in SA.if given a choice those SA guys will still select Broken down Kohli and Pujara over them.

ICC test finals where Indian bowlers could not do anything after winning the toss and bowling.

Indians have played in very very bowler friendly conditions. Kohli was going thru a rut which we have not seen any ATG batsman has gone thru.

I am still not convinced on Kohli but I would take him to Australia.

I have  high confidence in spinners in matches played in India and low confidence in fast bowlers when they have to take majority of 20 wickets.Bumrah will suffer as he will be lone ranger .I hope they get some help for him.

Anytime our lower order doesn't show up we get exposed.

Our top/middle order batsmen failing in SENA is one thing.

Constantly batting under par and overtly relying on Pant/Jadeja/Ashwin only means that this lineup is making those pitches look even worse.

Why Pant/Jadeja/Ashwin are batting for other team. Sam Curran for difference between India winning the England series and losing in 2018.

Plus under performers have been let go, they needed to be given those chances . Only guy in contention is KL Rahul, I have no idea why he is in the team.

Who else will you change???

Indian batting in Tests has definitely declined. We had players like Sehwag, Sachin, Dravid, Laxman in the playing XI now we cannot string 4-5 players in the XI who can score consistent runs. Jaiswal has been good but he is struggling for form as well, Pant is the only batter with consistency now. Even at home we have been struggling. India need to form a good core for at least home games for the next decade to keep the home record intact (unless we lose to NZ this series). Currently looking at our batting line up I have no confidence that we will score runs. Yesterday we saw how scared our batters were as they stuttered to 16/1 in 11 overs. On a wicket which had nothing for pacers our captain gets bowled while our pacers weren't able to even get one wicket. Some worrying signs for India not only for the Australian tour but beyond that as well. In T20 and ODIs I think we are fine as we see how well our A team in performing in the emerging players Asia cup.
