Team India needs lots of fighting mentality cricketers like Pant instead of prima donna sooperstars

Look for players who are performing regularly in

1)   Knockout matches

2)  Crunch matches like a series / tournaments decider.

3) When the team is under pressure.

4)  When playing conditions are tough and most are not performing.

There are some players who perform in such matches a high % of times.

Players have never been picked based on overall Ranji stats. There are too many below par bowlers and batters and weak teams.

Stats have to be there. If a batter averages 35 in Ranji then he can't be picked whatever his mentality. Because it shows lack of consistency.

Make a pool of the high average batters and low average bowlers with requisite international cricket attributes. Then pick those who are performing in big matches / tough situations regularly.

This is why selectors are there. Otherwise Statsguru type applications would have sufficed.

Pat Cummins, Imran Khan and Viv Richards - the hotter a player is, the better they are. This should be the only criteria for selection.

Nope, end of the day it is always about the stats. You can be a talented player like Kohli, or a street smart player like Dhoni with average talent - either way if you make runs or score wickets. It doesn’t matter..

I would rather take someone who is afraid of facing starc but somehow finds a way to score runs than someone who has “fearless” mentality but gets out playing a loose shot.

Dhoni is an average talent?

Now I’ve read it all!

BCCI sponsored Future captain Gill is waste of time. Averages around 37 from 26 tests equally horrible as kl rahul averaging 32 after a long carrer if 50 tests. Siraj is a pure waste of a slot. He should never be playing any tests.

Jaiswal and pant should remain. They have some fight

AUSTRALIANS ARE FIGHTERS EVEN WITHOUT BIG PLAYERS. INDIANS CHOKE AND CRUMBLE EVEN WITH SUPERSTARS. THAT'S HOW WE LOST ODI WORLD CUP AGAINST AUSTRALIA.

problem is it is highly subjective. Does Sarfrazs innings in the 1st test count? What about Pant’s innings today?  What exactly is a big match? What are easy runs? We don’t have pattas like Pakistan nowadays, when did we have a 600-700 score last time??

It's not that subjective.

Knockout matches like Finals, Semi Finals etc. are very clear cut. Look for batters and bowlers performing in these.

Tough batting conditions become very clear cut when most batters are failing. Like the 1st innings of the A team game in Australia for both teams. Look for batters scoring runs in these innings.

Tough bowling conditions become clear when most batters are scoring runs. Look for bowlers who are picking wickets for not too many runs in these conditions.

Batsmen fighting it out when there is a batting collapse is again a very easy to identify thing.

Crunch games like a series decider is again not subjective at all.

Selectors need to keep a tab regarding every player performing in the above.

Exactly !

And Travis Head is a big example of a batter performing in big games regularly.

Our shooperstars are nakli shooperstars they shove their head at a place when shyt gets tough,

Rohit Kohli Ashwin Jadeja all should have retired right after 50 over WC defeat

That would have meant 4-5 vacant places, just think how ridiculous was it to bench a batsman like Jurel for these pampered cricketers

There should be starting some serious investigation for it

I don’t believe a player can survive in Test matches by being a stat padder.

We need to understand what's the "limit" here.

It has been observed frequently that our selectors suffer from format blindness.

Meaning if a player performs in one format and had sufficient PR machinery backing him...the rope for his stint will be longer than usual...for some that rope even exists for 5 years.

KL Rahul is a prime example.

Reminder that last BG series we turned the series around when seniors left. We won the final match with a bowling attack of thakur, siani, natrajan and siraj. In batting gill, pant, Sundar contributed, pujara was the only senior who did

It's clearly the senior who are installing this choking mentality and whenever they are not present we have great winning mentality

Another more recent example, we got whitewashed this year in sri lanka odi series with seniors but in T20 series on the same tour, with no rohit and kohli we whitewashed them on the same pitches.

We don't need a big overhaul, just need to drop kohli, rohit, Rahul and team culture will change completely

May not be a bad idea actually. Obviously with more filters in place, like monitoring average over a period of a year or 10 test matches .. If your average drops below 45 in 10 test matches, you are out, even if you are Kohli. Then the program picks one from the Ranji with the same criteria to replace this guy..

Takes away the superstardom fetish we have in India…

I like this idea.

Make it batting average of >40 and bowling average of <28.

Maintain moving averages for 20 innings for every format separately.

Gill and Siraj were also called fighters after their Gabba show.

See now. Now same guys are called out either for attitude or for stat padding.

What changed? Nothing. Just their form dipped, they are still same players with same ability.

Even Rahane was called a fighter when he was new. Rahul was a hero after his 199 in that Karun Nair match.

He is not a fighting mentality cricketer. He goes for it. Has the skill to do it. If asked to drop guard at pitch he will struggle big time.

youngsters have one massive advantage. no fear. one half decent performance and they could explode into a series. virtually everyone that debuts for india does well at some point in their first 1-2 tests. the problems come later
