Rajat Patidar, the 31-year-old middle order batter, has been appointed as the captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The announcement was made by the franchise at an event at the KSCA on Thursday (February 13).

After having released Faf du Plessis, who had captained the side in the previous seasons, the Bengaluru-franchise were without a captaincy candidate ahead of the 2025 season. Patidar, who had led Madhya Pradesh to the final of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier this season, is now set to become the eighth player to lead RCB.

Patidar made his IPL debut in 2021 and has been a part of the franchise since then. With the ability to dominate pace and spin with equal ease, he has featured in 27 games for RCB, scoring 799 runs at a strike rate of 158.85. He was one of the three retentions for RCB ahead of the mega auctions, apart from Virat Kohli and Yash Dayal. He was retained for INR 11 Crore.

Patidar's appointment is a fresh direction for the Royal Challengers, who have been led by Virat Kohli and du Plessis over the years. Kohli first captained the team in May 2011, stepping in for Daniel Vettori who was not available for three matches. He took over full-time captaincy of the team in 2012 and led the team until the 2021 season.

Under Kohli's captaincy, RCB made the playoffs in 2015 and were the runners-up in the subsequent year, a season in which the star batter scored a record 973 runs. They also reached the playoffs stage in 2020 and 2021. Royal Challengers also made the playoffs in two seasons in the 2022-24 cycle, when du Plessis was the captain of the side after Kohli stepped down. The senior Indian batter, however, captained the team in three matches in 2023, standing in for du Plessis who was recovering from a rib injury and featured only as an Impact Player.

Can't say I saw this coming.

If RCB wins - "Kohli's timely tip helped bigly".

If they lose, throw Patidar under the bus and run a train over him. Win-win situation!

you mean Patidar is JP Nadda of RCB?

RCB should get KS Bharat and KL Rahul in the team as well. Make it a trimurti of hopeless with Kohli being omnipresent :agree:

I wanted KL to be in RCB, KL even in pre auction hinted to RCB calling himself as "Bangalore boy" or something similar.

this guy is supposed to be a spin basher but couldn't buy a run against spinners in the tests against England.

Better player of pace, he has a good backfoot game, should have been in the squad for the Aussie tour.

He is RCB's best player tbh. Dont think they have too many other options either

When Patidar is your best player, you may as well sell the franchise and move on. RCB and Punjab should be forced to sell their franchises with Delhi not far behind.
