And how did that Australian team lose to S Rameh, SS Das, Bahutule, Dighe, Nikhil Kulkarni? Even Zaheer Khan was a rookie. 

 

Kolkata test victory was individual brilliance from 3 players, Laxman, Dravid and Harbhajan. What was reason for Aus team to choke in series decider against team having 6 nobodies.

Looking at scorecard that opening partnership between Das and Ramesh seems to be critical. 123 runs opening against McGrath and Gillespie

Laxman happened. His quick fiery knock set up the game for us.

Laxman's cameo was significant. He was absolutely tonking them.  Even the dismissal was shocking one. HE absolutely nailed it.

Irrespective of SR, so many batsmen seem to be playing aerial shots v spinners in this test. Warne was absolutely livid.

2001 was weird year for Aus, lost in India. Failed to win series v NZ at home.

SS Das once upon a time had the best defence in FC cricket. He scored tons of runs before getting a chance. S Ramesh was pretty good as well. The issue with him was when Sehwag came to scene in 2001 there was no way back. It was Sehwag and on another side a roulette of openers like Akash Chopra , SS Das, S Ramesh.

The reason is that fans always wanted *him* to take us across the line in 4th inning chases. That's where the glory is. 

 

There are exceptions, of course, like VVSL/RD 2001 3rd inning.

yes i agree but it's irrational. if gets out cheaply in 1st or 2nd innings he gets crucified. if he scores it's ignored because well you it's tendulkar

Watch the video, on day 1 commentators were saying that he was best bowler for India getting maximum purchase.

 

These things rarely happen nowadays where you see commentators calling a part timer as best bowler of the day.

my favorite stat about that series was india winning at kolkata by 171 runs and 171 also being their first innings score. they followed on and won by an innings - kind of!

Reason may be that no-4 position was considered as the banker who could maximise run scoring opportunities... Its not like opening or no-3 who have to negotiate the new ball or a no-5 who had to play with tail in that era although Tendulkar has had to play all these roles in the 90s. ... Kohli, Lara, Miandad all played at no-4 and are judged much more than say a no-3 batsman or a no-6
