Jan 13? 14? 15? Same thing happens during Navaratri/Dasara and Deepavali. Just get over it, people. Enjoy the festivities, esp the food, around this time and quit the bellyaching over when exactly it should be enjoyed. Stan AF 1

I just tell them "if you eat chicken on Jan 13 and someone tells you later - "OMG TODAY IS SANKRANTI" - just don't sweat it. Your Sankranti be Jan 14. Do your vegetarian thing on that day." If that God for whom you are doing this is going to be so vindictive that you will be cursed for eating chicken on some particular day, better not to pray to that God. But my parents never went nuts if I had accidentally had chicken on an auspicious day which I have done many times over the years.

Unlike Deepwali or Ganesh Chaturthi which are based on Indian lunar calendar, Sankranti or pongal is based on a solar event which coincides with a solar calendar. It is roughly based on winter solstice. Corrected by Indian calendar calculation. Hence, it always falls on either January 14 or 15th. it basically denotes the start of summer in Indian region, so farmers can prepare for new season for harvesting by cutting down the old harvest. Khara/Ven pongal may be 5/10 when paired with coconut chutney and medu vada, but sakkarai pongal is 0/10. Or missed someone? There are many old timers who rarely post. I am half blood, from mom's side who are originally from Palakkad in Kerala. Big Tamil community in that district. Other half from proper Hindi heartland. I know the language but some of my pronunciations are off, still can't get 'zha' right which is so unique to that language. Hope to become a more confident speaker soon, right now I can hold a conversation in Bengali smoother than in Tamil. Almost all my close relatives have migrated out of there in the last few decades. I attended a couple of weddings, family functions in my junior schooldays. Even for my mother those were the only trips since her marriage. I remember very little from my visits there. Going there and spending some time, getting to know the place/people is on my bucket list. Maybe one day.
