rangeelaraja Posted May 3 Posted May 3 (edited) Could J. Sai Deepak or Anand Ranganathan get the better of Mehdi Hasan in a tightly moderated debate? I’d honestly love to see an Indian news channel bring him on for a live face-off. Hasan has a knack for subtly steering the conversation, while Sai Deepak is relentless about pulling things back to the core issue. Ranganathan is an encyclopedia and has a strong ideological and Palki Sharma is sarcastic as hell. I think J Sai Deepak in his elements would out do Mehdi Hasan most easily. That would be a proper debate worth watching. Edited May 3 by rangeelaraja
Number Posted May 4 Posted May 4 J Sai Deepak is really good. His style is quite like taking his opponent in a direction that the opponent feels is right and then suddenly pull the rug with one counter. rangeelaraja and ravishingravi 2

J Sai Deepak vs. Mehdi Hasan would be a primetime blockbuster.
Mariyam Posted May 4 Posted May 4 @rangeelaraja The guy who is debating Mehdi Hassan in the video you posted is a total dud. Can't really form an opinion on his debating skills from that one video. Shashi Tharoor would eat alive any of the people you've mentioned in a fairly moderated debate. rangeelaraja, Lord, Sgattick10 and 2 others 1 4

I agree that guy is a dud….but when Mehdi Hasan is your opponent in a debate, he does cross examination like wily lawyer — unless you beat him at his own game, he is a difficult opponent. Tharoor Saheb uses a lot of fluff words, sounds super impressive with all his eloquence but not super impressed by the depths of his arguments. He led the opposition to tell Indias side of the story after Op Sindoor. Kya hua uska ? J.Sai Deepak is young and ruthless - not the most eloquent speaker - but exceptionally hard to beat in a debate when he is prepared. Mariyam 1
bsriharsha Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Mehdi Hasan can easily be beaten. He picks easy opponents to get a win playing the victim and the liberal card. Laaloo 1
Mariyam Posted May 4 Posted May 4 @rangeelaraja Dr Tharoor is actually very well read, has worked in the UN and has held various portfolios in the public space in India. He is not just all thesaurus and faf. Below is a rather lengthy debate between him and the former chief justice. He is able to articulate his point of view really well and does a fair bit of exposition too. An hour long but a master class in debating and public speaking. Not putting his more famous Oxford Debate, assuming most would have seen that. Nikhil_cric and rangeelaraja 2

No one could do anything about that.. damage had been done already and Indians were very slow to react to counter narratives Tharoor at least tried. Laser eyes was the main culprit. Diplomacy is under him and he was the first one to start Rules of Engagement train and threw Goi under the bus. Edited May 4 by Lone Wolf

And I deliberately did not put him as someone I would like to see pitted against Mehdi Hasan, after watching the below. Would love to know your opinion about it as a qualified lawyer. Found him to be too defensive and playing on the backfoot. I know this an interview not a proper debate. But what I really find lacking in Tharoor Sahab for all of his peerless oratory is to be able to punch back with a fact based counter narrative - that puts the opponent on the backfoot. J Sai Deepak and Anand Ranganathan are too good with that. Tharoor sahab is too suave and a touch too soft to intimidate an opponent in a battle of narratives. Mariyam 1

The MEA did not tell IAF not to do SEAD/DEAD before being airborne within 300 kms of the LoC. It was the IAF that failed in narrative building of their successes and shaming and exposing Pak lies on the battlefield.

If he is losing the narrative, he goes total aggressive and victim route. He has typical same old left wing talking points which don’t have any depth. Sure, he dresses well and has good English. That’s about it. Apart from that 0 things about him that are impressive. Those semantics give that impression like he is some intellectual: don’t know about the other 2 but Sai Deepak is a lawyer so he can definitely run circles against some journo like Mehdi who is more rhetorical I feel. Never say never though but based on what I have seen.
