Brazilian Ronaldo won his team a WC and his health episode in one final cost his team the cup and scored plenty of goals. Portuguese Ronaldo shows up for himself and taking penalties. Hasn't made any impact in the WC and Portugal actually looked better when he was benched. Look at the teammates Brazilian Ronaldo had in 2002 - Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos, Cafu. Brazil had such an easy run to the final and Ronaldo was pretty much a poacher. Stick Cristiano Ronaldo in that team with that level of competition and he would have won the world cup as well.

Maradona was washed up by the age of 29, in the 1990 WC. He failed to score a goal in the entire tournament IIRC. He was fat and a shadow of his 1986 IMO Pele is the GOAT. Due to recency bias, his greatness is overlooked. I wouldn't even say 1990, he was already past his best around 1987/1988. Unable to get past defenders any more. Pele and Messi for me. Pele was probably more clutch, as mentioned he missed his two prime world cups in 1962 and 1966 but was still great in 1958 and 1970.
putrevus Posted June 21 Posted June 21 Pele played the game when it was still amateur soccer. It is like saying Bradman is best based on just 99.96.

Champion in one era will always be a champion in another. That too, guys like Bradman, Dhyan Chand, Pele, Chamberlain, Bobby Fischer were such extreme outliers in their disciplines. Pro era mein bhi bawal macha dete.

I don’t deny that but would he have been better than guy like Messi is the question.

Cristiano Ronaldo (CR) doesn't make the team better unlike the Brazilian Ronaldo (BR). CR is a selfish player who only plays for himself unlike BR. All CR cares about is himself. Still remember the last WC where Portugal looked better when CR was benched and remember his reaction when his replacement scored a bunch of goals! I would take BR over CR any day. rollingstoned and New guy 2

They might have won 1998 also if CR7 was in that team.

Even though Ronaldo9 only scored 4 goals in 98 he still contributed a lot in overall play with his speed and dribbling. But in 2002 he was very static and just finished off plays against weak opposition. Cristiano would have done the same.
The Hound Posted June 22 Posted June 22 I cannot take Pele seriously in GOAT conversations, he mostly played against part time footballers and full time plumbers/teachers etc. Not to mention he didn't left Brazil for club football and never played in Europe. Maradona although elite had a very short peak. People deny it today because he has fallen off a cliff since 2020s but Cristiano Ronaldo is the second best player of all time behind Leo Messi of course who's the clear GOAT. rollingstoned, Tattieboy and Ultimate_Game 3

Pele was the pioneer, by your logic nobody should take Sobers seriously as well. Never mind pre WW-2 GOATs in various sports. Edited June 22 by Gollum Tattieboy, cricspirit and rollingstoned 1 2

Johan Cruyff and Pele are two of the pioneers. But Pele was known all over the world when there was no TV. It is an indisputable truth. Unlike cricket we can use filters there is not a lot of filter you can use here. Not very different from Tennis debates. First era - Rod Laver Golden age era - Borg, Mcenroe Next era - Sampras, Agassi Modenern era - Fedex, Nadal, Djoko
MechEng Posted June 24 Posted June 24 Peak Maradona makes Shoaib Akhtar look sane. Scary speed and energy, never seen a human move with that energy in a game.

He played first class games against top oppositions in both England and Australia and was phenomenal there. Few months ago, some Brazilians on Reddit said Garrincha was the best dribbler ever, I watched his videos from 1962 world Cup and they looked like a lower level league games of today. Football as a sport has evolved so much from pele's best days.
