R Ashwin, A crap Test Bowler?

Even though i was disappointed with Dhawan and Rohit, we cannot equate failure of a batsman to a bowler. batsman gets only one chance, one good ball, one freak ball, one mistake they are gone. Bowlers get million chances to come back int he same match.

Ashwin was the main reason we lost the test.. Totally unaffective.. 0 wickets in 42 overs. He is too predictable now.. He gotta get dropped. 'Fastest 100 wickets' excuse doesnt hold the ground.. but take him in sub continent if you want but not in overseas.. take Oza even..

As a team we haven't done jack shyte outside India for like ever. :giggle:
And first time we were trying to do something, Ashwin ruined it.. :((

Akash Chopra just made a good point in Star Power.Ashwin uses just his fingers and not his body to get spin.in India he gets away with it due to pitches and hard SG ball

Ok, so another reason to drop him in next test..

It is a well known point we have been discussing. Murali uses fingers, body, wrists everything.. possibly even di** :cantstop:

:cantstop: True.. This is exactly the reason why i am disappointed. It is not like he induced edges and fielders dropped or even he beat the bat for turn once in a while. Even i can forgive on this track. But the slow motion release of Ashwin is not going to take him very far on these kind of surfaces. Release has to be quicker. He needs drift which he lacks as well. if you lack drift, revolution, pace you will look helpless. Even if you land the balls at very good length they will be able to play him easily. In Indai pitches somewhat help him so his subtle variations become more dangerous.

His performance outside india is a cause for definite concern. Nobody expects him to run thru opposition batsmen and finish with match figures of 8-120 or something along those lines abroad. What a spinner should do in places like SAF, Aus etc is provide that crucial breakthru that then creates the opening for the quicks to come in an improve on the advantage. Nathan Lyon has been exceptional in doing that, this Ashes.

agree his figures : 36-5-83-0 Zak's figures : 34-1-135-1(Kallis LBW)
Yeah, and Kallis wasn't really out, that was just lucky. Ashwin easily outbowled Zak in the fourth innings. Bowling in India and bowling in South Africa are different for an Indian spinner, and it takes time to learn the trade. Ashwin may or may not go on become a better spinner in these conditions, but it is too early to write him off. SC spinners have always found it pretty tough outside Asia - even Abdul Qadir, the legendary Pak spinner averages 48 while playing away from Pakistan. Even our spin stalwarts of the 60s and 70s (with the possible exception of Chandra) do not have enviable records in these countries, often having strike rates around 100.

You are missing the point.. Statistically fast bowlers do much much better here than spinner and i can assure you any bowlers who plays will take at least 1 wicket which is better than what ashwin did even on day 5 Had he taken even 1 wicket we would have won the match ...also please don't use this type of logic with me..if this is case why even play anyone else ever again? We will never know how quick bowler would have done here cos he did not play but we can see problem with ashwin away from home and obvious solution is play quick bowler on green tracks And play ash win at home ..horses for courses until we find all rounder which allows us to play everyone :winky: till then we have to make do with picking bowlers where they perform and Australia in past had Shane warne who performed on these tracks and we had Kumble who was very decent too away from home but when u don't have those guys u play bowlers who suit the conditions and playing 4 quickies on green track will give more control than playing a spinner who won't even pick a wicket and bowlers would have to bowl much longer with 3 guys picking wickets than 4 guys all picking wickets..it's simple maths really
come on dude, if our pacers are consistent, then we don't even have to worry about ashwin picking wickets. imo on what I saw, abdv and faf are playing out Ashwin hence he has less rpo. They clearly targeted zak and ishant, even shami to some extend duing the last session. They are playing steyn, phil and morkel in nets, which is why they milked easy runs against our pacers. the 4th pacers will not be much different for them. abdv's dismissal was a big turning point, but it isn't a good ball. It was an unlucky inside edge. even philader played well against shami. Also we have to keep in mind that abdv and faf aren't someone who struggle against spin. They played well against Ashwin, even the commentators said it once. It's a collective bowling failure, rather than just targeting ashwin. adding a 4th pacer will make the job easier for SA, unless we have 4 shami's in the team.

Why not? you expect 3 pacers to pick 20 wickets in a match. This does not happen anywhere. Regarding targeting Ashwin, they did not target him because score was big and there was no need to score quickly because they knew if they do not lose wicketsm, tey will win it and they would have won if Ishant Shami had not picked the wickets of ABDV, Dumini and then run out of Faf and then you would have struggled to defend Ashwin's lack of wickets. You cannot have a holding bowler when you are only playing 4 bowlers. IT can work in first innings when pitch is fresh and fast bowlers are getting a lot of assistance, but in SA 4th and 5th day are mostly best of batting on pitch which do not break because of grass on it. Wanderers was a pitch like that and in that situation, it is is imperative that all bowlers pick wickets. Our fast bowlers are not McGrath or Marshall. They are rarely going to run through teams when there is less assistance for them. Then we need a 4th bowler who is also picking up wickets and not just holding one end whether he is a pacer or a spinner. Our fast bowlers had attacking fields all the time except last half an hour, so they were bound give boundaries here and there because of attacking fields.

Nothing against Ashwing. I hope he is part of India's team in future. He is still one of the best in India and I will lend my support to him in future and even now. But I just hope India tries something different. Look at it this way, we need to do things which we can cause South Africa some trouble. South Africans are reading him well. Their middle and top order has Amla and De Villers in it, who are reading him well. Faf also didn't have much problem with him. I think ideally he can trouble Aliviro Peterson, the most in this South African line up. Othern than Peterson, it will be hard for Ashwin to strike a blow. May be Smith, if Zaheer does Ashwin a favor by not taking Graeme again. But seriulsy, I think a change in a bowler, can be a good idea.

dude even south african pacers with steyn and philander could not pick 20 wickets on their own after morkel got injured even aussie pacers at perth could not pick 20 wickets on their own and they even had watson! there is no team which jsut plays with 3 pacers and expect 4th bowler to just hold one end ..you cannot give me even single example pakistan did and they got hammered in south africa..its same as playing only 1 spinner at home you have to play according to conditions ..no one said ashwin is bad spinner please do not go by thread title see the posts recently :winky: we are again ot going to pick 20 wickets and ashwin is the reaon a..not because he is crap its because hei s spinner playing on green tracks ..even ajmal failed here to pick wickets and only cashed in on dry track
