sensible-indian Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 ashwin is useless in the ODI team and this will be his last limited overs WC tournament. i dont think they will make him play another T20 or 50 over WC. he simply refuses to slog the ball despite having some batting ability. very laid back attitude. should have played in the 70s. would have been a spin bowling allrounder demi-god. Performed very well in the last 2 ICC tourneys. Champions Trophy and T20 WC. As an ODI bat, he is mostly useless at No 8. Match losing batsman. He doesn't slog cos he is INCAPABLE of slogging. He is a touch player and he takes an ugly stance when wanting to slog everything to the leg side (like in gully cricket). Its his issue. But if he comes up the order, he can do well but he doesn't run well so that's the problem with that. As for his bowling, right from the time he debuted, he gets attacked for being useless (and sometimes he does look useless) but he is the one who stands up when the team needs him in tourneys or anytime. After a long time, India gets a bowler with some braincells, a bowler who doesn't lose his nerve in KO games, a bowler who is clutch (he was the freaking guy who pulled everything back with 2 of the most crucial wickets in CT finals along with a maiden over after England were starting to get going after an initial wicket loss, he was the one who ensured SA didn't run away to a crazy total WC T20 semifinals when every other bowler went missing)... but we think of ways to throw him out. Ashwin needs to be given a scare and made to fight for his place but never discarded. I won't be surprised if Ashwin raises his game gradually as the WC unfolds. He usually gets better as the tournament goes on. So let's see.
Marut Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 That is because he is as non threatening in the middle overs and other teams are more than happy to milk him for singles with the odd 6....Bhajji was used as a strike bowler...did that work out is a different debate,but when he was in the team he was our premier bowler not just spinner. Anyways I hope he goes back to what worked for him when he debuted that is opening the bowling in LOI's....Hey it worked for Deepak Patel on these pitches before....may be we can use one of our medium pacers in the middle overs. In ODIs outside the SC? Bhajji has an ODI average of 40 against non minnows outside the SC. Talk about him being the premier bowler. In India, Ashwin will be as good as Bhajji ever was.

Nice changes at the crease, change of pace and also bowled a seamer type that moved away. Kept it simple. I am more worried about Jaddu's bowling, since injury he doesn't seem to be as tight as before or capable of taking wickets.

Clarke Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Above average performance early on, 3 maiden overs is something to cherish on a flat track. The trouble I see is that forget doosra, he doesn't have a credible arm ball that makes sloggers think twice before attempting that wild swing over mid wicket, hence is very suspect to six hitting on the shorter boundaries. Its ok to skip the carrom ball since its an action/release change but he will need those floaters/top spinners. Bhajji IIRC had a doosra and a top spinner as well earlier and struggled without the doosra later on in his career. Swann didn't have the doosra but was the master of classical offie as well as the arm ball.
sensible-indian Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Ashwin bowled brilliantly today. Stats won't show how good he was today. Pak were moving slowly but steadily. He came on, created pressure and got the Haris wicket which brought about the collapse. Later with the match virtually over, he was trying new stuff and got carted around in that Misbah over. Afridi played him well. But he faced just a few balls. The best part about Ashwin was the way he tossed up the deliveries outside off and spun them in. Even his carrom balls (1 or 2 I think) landed perfectly. The seam up delivery was awesome too. It moved a bit away. Haven't seen him bowl this well even in India in recent times. Reminded me of 2010 Ashwin but with more skills.

Pakistan were trying to keep wickets and still get odd boundary, and him bowling a maiden first up, did put pressure back on Pakistan right away. I have to say that he looked brilliant and might have bowled the best in the game to not be rewarded much.

I think Ind has to learn to understand the strengths of its bowlers - some bowlers are economical, some bowlers look for wkts, while some are good at both. What is probably hurting our bowlers is the mindset that everyone has to bowl economically and support batting, rather than bowling to their strength. One wayward over bowled by a bowler and we all start cursing. From the squad, bowlers such as Ashwin, Shami, Yadav and Bhuvi (first spell) should be used to pick up wkts. Mohit, Jadeja and Axar to bowl tight overs. Ofc, a lot depends upon the form on the day too but this is probably how they should be judged. Best way to reduce opposition's RR is by picking up wkts
