What is trend of retiring and giving up captaincy mid series?

saw it with dhoni,kallis,sanga and now amla.

even bmac announcement came out of the blue but at least he is finishing up a series.

with Pakistan obviously anything can happen.

Good decision. He might have realised that his leadership is affecting the performance of team. He is too soft and laid back to be a good captain.

Abdv to be the standin captain ,respect to amla for realising this so early unlike our captain mule singh dhoni who was shamelessly hanging on to the captaincy to preserve his brand!! 

Amla was a poor test captain and it was obvious for everyone to see that

He was forced into captaincy in the name of diversity ... both his personal game and the team have suffered because of it.

I think it is a brave decision for him to step down and give captaincy to someone who is more cut out for it.

Good call by Amla ,  more like Sachin who could set aside his ego and play under someone who was his junior.

Dhoni and Ganguly to some extent  refused to give up the role, even now Dhobi is not ready to give up his captaincy in odis and T20.

If  I am not wrong didn't Dhoni not give a statement about "this not being right time to get a new captain before world cup".

Dhoni like Ganguly in later stages of his captaincy is holding on to it for all the wrong reasons. Captaincy has a shelf life once it is over you need to exit, he quit Test cricket in the middle of the series god only knows why he did it.

Good and honest decision by Amla. Not everyone is able to give up a position of power by himself because he is under-performing as a captain..

Only issue is ...he should not have done it in the middle of the series. Either before it or after it.

No doubt he wasn't a good captain ...but seeing that AB is in the midst of retiring,I think this is a bad decision. frequent change in captains is not good for a team. Atleast in the middle of a series.

Dhoni gave up captaincy after 15 test match loses outside India. It has left a deep scar on Indian cricket fans.

Good to see amla have some honor left in him to take such a wise decision.

exactly.the timing is also okay because saf cannot afford to lose this series,they'll lose their crown if they lose this series amd I don't think amla was the guy who would have led a comeback in the series.

Abdv is not good but better than amla for the time being and also he wanted the test captaincy so all happy at the end

Solid decision by Amla..... his captaincy sort of reminded me of Sachin's time as Indian captain. Some guys just don't have the personality to lead or can't do it as effectively and it takes a brave person to realize it by himself and step aside.

Looking forward to many more runs from Amla now that he is freed of this pressure. He is too good a batter to have performed like his recent outings (before his last innings 200).

Agree. I think Amla has shown himself to be a coward as when it got too hot in the kitchen he did a runner bang in the middle of a series.

Its a symptom as to why SA never win anything. They have a streak of mental weakness running throughout them and can never hack a pressure situation.

Funny thing when people bring up MSD

He gave up Test captaincy in the middle of AUS series - People were like what a COWARD didn't even wait the end of the series..

think you've  joined this forum new.msd should have resigned instantly after the two away whitewashes,even if those weren't huge then the final nail in the coffin was the England home series loss where he should and would have been sacked aa the captain but for his godfather sreeni.

He is pathetic test captain and had almost 0 knowledge of bowling rotation,handling pacers,load distribution of bowlers .he resigned two years too late and nobody called him coward on this forum ,most were happy (good riddance ) and some were questioning why didn't stay till the whole series.that was it!!

Abd, steyn, morkel are all going to retire soon..they don't have same quality of players. Need to start blooding young ones.
