West Indies have many talented youngsters but the board hasn't utilized them well or the players stop working hard. That's the reason why WI cricket is not the same as it used to be.

Fidel, Jerome Taylor, Kemar, Jason Holder, Shannon,

and now these youngsters, West Indies definitely not short of tall quick bowlers...I think the region still produces the raw 1970/80s type bowlers but lack of opportunities to play County Cricket in UK regularly probably been detrimental to meeting their full potential, i.e. County Cricket would have provided a good finishing school, so of many of the past West Indies players use to play County Cricket regularly.

This boy even looks the part - a proper throwback West Indian fast bowler.  Its been too long since we had one (or more actually) who actually lives up to that.  I hope he does.  Cricket has been missing it.

WI have had a lot of fast bowlers in last decade Jermaine Lawson, Darren Powell, Fidel Edwards, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel, Jerome Taylor. All these guys have bowled quick, but problem is pace alone isnt enough now. Cricket has changed. It is not 70s or 80s cricket anymore where pace or intimidation worked for WI bowlers. WI still produce a lot of quick bowlers but they don't have same impact they used to have before.

The most important factor is successful WI bowler is never always concentrated on just pace likes of Holding and Marshall. They were not always quick. They operated very much like Steyn, measured in their approach that helped them play a lot of matches, get less injuries and concentrated on bowling in right areas too. Pace alone is overrated. Pace is just an x-factor which a bowler can use along with other aspects of bowling like swing, seam, bouncers, yorkers, etc. A bowler can surprise a batsman even with sudden increase of pace and not just with decrease in pace with slow balls. Steyn has mastered it. He will be bowling 135 and will suddenly change gear and catch batsmen off guard with 10-12K increase of pace. The measured approach is the reason Steyn has played so many matches without any major injury breaks.

That's why Malcolm Marshall was as great as he was.  My favorite fast bowler ever.
