Little Master Hanif Mohammad passes away...

 Hanif Mohammad, the original 'Little Master' who played the longest innings in Test cricket, has died at the age of 81. He had been undergoing treatment for respiratory complications from his lung cancer in Karachi's Aga Khan hospital. Late on August 8, he was shifted to the ICU and placed on a ventilator. Hanif was diagnosed with the cancer in 2013, for which he received treatment in London.

 

Hanif played 55 Tests, including Pakistan's first. Imtiaz Ahmed, 88, and Waqar Hasan, 83, are the only two survivors from that team. Hanif was renowned for his immaculate defensive technique. He scored 3915 runs at an average of 43.98. His best was an epic 337 as Pakistan saved the Barbados Test in 1958 while following on. It was the highest Test score and the longest first-class innings then. At 970 minutes, it is still the longest Test innings.

Pakistan has been always blessed with great bowlers and there are very few batsman that have come to surpass Hanif.

Few interesting little facts about Little Master:

• Still holds the record for playing Longest Test inng in terms of minutes; 970 minutes... Scored 337 vs WI in 1958 (Pakistan got followed-on scoring just 106 runs in 1st inng replying WI's 579, Haneef played a match-saving historic  inng and Pak scored 657 in 2nd inng of this 6-Day Tets)
• He bowled in international cricket with both hands...
• For some time he did wicket-keeping too (was a brilliantine fielder as well)...
• One of his coach was an Afghan named "Abdul Aziz Durrani" (played first class cricket in india and his son "Saleem Durrani" represented india in Test crciket)
• His mother Ameer Bibi was Indian (pre-partition) national badminton champion
• In 1959 he broke Bradman's highest First class innf runs (450) and scored 499, got run out take 500th run, it remained a record until Lara's 500 in 1994
• His family, called Muhammed Family... had 4 brothers (Haneef, Mushtaq, Sadiq, Wazir) who represented Pakistan in Test cricket, their 5th brother Raees Muhammed was once 12th player of team.
• His son Shoaib Muhammed also played Test cricket for Pak and grandson Shehzar Muhammed has been recently playing First class cricket.
• In his career's last Test match vs NZ 1970, 3 brothers Haneef, Sadiq and Mushtaq played together (Haneef and Sadiq opened for Pak, this match was career's last for Haneef and debut for Sadiq)
