How do we define a washed out game?

Updating after every match doesn't make sense. Rankings will fluctuate too much it is updated after every match. Btw, position of a team doesn't matter in ranking calculations.

Beating a no 7 SA is team is no different that beating no 2 Pakistan team. Only thing matter is whether difference between ratings of two teams in more than 40 or not.

India has 112 points, so series results with any team with more than 72 points will give them same points.

Ind have 112, and WI 65, so that's more than 40

flawed system,  treats all draws as same, they need to determine how many overs lost due to rain, bad weather etc  will constitute a washout.

Ranking system is flawed on multiple fronts. First, Test cricket ranking should not follow other format rankings in that points allocation is the same irrespective of whether venue is at home or away. Away wins must get more weightage.

Also, instead of counting a rolling fixed month period, we should take in account the last home and away series a team has played against a certain opposition.

For example, if India played Aus in India in 2012, India played Aus in Aus in 2014 and India played Aus in Aus again in 2015; then the 2012 and 2015 series should be counted and not the 2014 one. All such series results for each opposition (last home and last away series) should be counted. The cut-off should be 7 years such that teams that haven't repeated their series within the last 7 years should be penalized for not renewing the result. There should be some accommodation for not having series for political or security reasons, such as Ind-Pak.

IIRC howstat used to publish their own ranking which gave more points for away games. Not sure why they stopped doing it.

Any ranking system can be considered to flawed. Such systems are not designed to be perfect and they can never be. There is no way to ensure that it can't be questioned. 7 years is way too long to determine best teams. Most of the teams have 3-4 30+ age players and within 4-5 years they retire. So team changes and keeping that team as best for 2-3 years because of that would be again a flawed method.

Here's the formula they use:

The points calculation for test rankings is done as below.

  • Each team scores points based on the results of their matches.
  • Each team's rating is equal to its total points scored divided by the total matches and series played. (A series must include at least two Tests).
  • A series only counts if played in the last four years.
  • Series played in the first two years of the four-year limit count half; essentially, recent matches are given more weight.
  • To determine a team's rating after a particular series:
    • Find the series result
      • Award 1 point to a team for each win
      • Award 1/2 point to a team for each draw
      • Award 1 bonus point to the team winning the series
      • Award 1/2 bonus point to each team if the series is drawn
    • Convert the series result to actual ratings points
      • If the gap between the ratings of the two teams at the commencement of the series is less than 40 points, then the ratings points for each team equals:
        • (The team's own series result) multiplied by (50 points MORE than the opponent's rating) PLUS
        • (The opponent's series result) multiplied by (50 points LESS than the opponent's rating)
      • If the gap between the ratings of the two teams at the commencement of the series is more than or equal to 40 points, then the ratings points for the stronger team equals:
        • (The team's own series result) multiplied by (10 points MORE than the team's own rating) PLUS
        • (The opponent's series result) multiplied by (90 points LESS than the team's own rating)
      • If the gap between the ratings of the two teams at the commencement of the series is more than or equal to 40 points, then the ratings points for the weaker team equals:
        • (The team's own series result) multiplied by (90 points MORE than the team's own rating) PLUS
        • (The opponent's series result) multiplied by (10 points LESS than the team's own rating)
    • Add the ratings points scored by the team to the total ratings points already scored (in previous matches, as reflected by the Table)
    • Update the number of matches played by the team through adding one more than the number of games in the series (a two Test match series will result in the match count getting incremented by three)
    • Divide the new rating points with the updated number of matches to get the final rating.

In my opinion, they need to just remove a no-result and a washed out game, a game that because of rain doesn't have a minimum of 360 overs/ 4 days from the calculations.

All said and done.  I have to admit pak deserved the no 1 but India will get it if thwy do well against tougher opponents they will play shortly. So no worries there.  WI is a disgrace they had young kids watching the game in troves in poart of Spain and this pathetic washout some ussain storm or patric bolt in there would probably go back to school and takeup some other sport now leaving some trundler for cricket

These rankings are nonsense, a team who can't even draw a Test match in Aus and SA now no.1. Can't win a test series against Zim

or West Indies!

What a farce! No wonder Test cricket is joke!

This is how Pakistan has done in test series from 2012.   Just like us, they have done well in the last 2 years and quite badly before that.  Their only outside Asia performance has been this draw in England and they have also defeated Sri Lanka in an away series, like us.

Pak no 1 status wont last long, but still well done. Doing well in eng with such a young sides deserves credit.

India would be no 1 soon and would be there for long as we have 13 test at home and after that 3 test in SL, then we go to Sa where we have done well in recent test series. We may have not won series in Sa but we have done well . After that another home series against Lanka. So till then our no.1 would be secure. Then the Real test in Eng beguns but again that series would depend on Anderson fitness and cook form. Also would eng be able to fill those holes in their lineup which pak Exploited. Good thing for Indian team is all the team is young and going in good form . Another gr8 sign is see with virat is he wants to win at any cost and once a team gets into winning habbit the ego of not loosing creeps which is the best thing. Virat thinks like a champion but he also needs some champion resources.

Problem for Pakistan would be at year end when they'll have to travel to NZ n AUS. Also the biggest ques would be once younis n misbah retires. What about leadership????

Rankings are calculated for last 3 years. I think performances only from 2013-16 would have been considered.

Pakistan pace bowling has been struggling for a while, even in finding new talent... but a bit of surprise that recently some quality batsman (obv not upto ind batsmen quality) started appearing... 6,8 years ago besides few big names almost all other new batsmen (like Farhat, Taufiq, Faisal Iqbal etc) were 32-36 Test avg talent... Now recent players like Asad, Azhar, Sami, Sarfraz, Haris, Babar etc are all good enough to maintain high 40 avgs...
