Old video - Shastri - Nasser Hussain verbal spat 2011 India tour of england

I was following this tour and knew Shastri said that England are jealous of India but wasn't aware how Nasser Hussain owned Shastri in commentary box.

This whole tour was such an embarrassment from the one of the worst ever on-field performances to cringe-worthy commentary of Shastri Gavaskar.

Terrible tour. Start of disaster for India in tests after the highs of Ganguly and Dravid era. I am not sure if it is even over now.

The sad thing is, even after this disaster of a tour, the veterans didn't step aside and went to the Australia tour, hoping for one last hurrah down under. We would have lost with a younger team too but at-least the process of rebuilding would have started sooner and new players would have got a taste of overseas conditions. Playing in that 2011-12 series helped Kohli when he toured Australia again 3 years later.

That Aus tour was a much bigger disaster. Watching VK bowl was cringeworthy in those bouncy Aussie decks.

 

Even the ODI series was disgraceful to watch. Fittingly it ended with Aus walloping us and then following suit to SL to complete thorough domination.

Frankly most players were on such a high after the world cup win that they couldn't careless or didn't have the hunger or zeal to perform. It was so obvious in 2011 and even 2012.

Before the eng tour, SRT had proved everything. won a world cup, had a successful second coming with an test average of almost 57 with 99 hundreds in tests + ODI. But no, he had to get his 100th and in the process squandered his legacy as the best modern day batsman. Now he is just one of the ATGs. Blah!!!!

Worst thing is the expectations were high,  for me personally anyway, the last test series was the away tour to SA I think and India were excellent there in a 1-1 draw. I thought India may lose but itd be close. A patently unfit Zaheer Khan broke down in the first couple of hours of the series and with him went any chances we had.

Shastri as usual was talking non sense..Why would England jealous of IPL?And even if they are,why discuss that while playing test series?We were getting phainty after phainty and Shastri was high about IPL.Naseer is brilliant commentator apart from his "donkey"comment.

So you are saying if a batsman achieves success he should just retire on top even if he feels he has something still to give to the team? For his own personal average and legacy? That is the definition of selfish for me, something which Lara and Sanga both did and their teams suffered. 

 

Lets also ignore that Kohli, etc swear that their playing on the opposite side of these stars helped them transition to international cricket. There is a reason we still produce batting greats after batting greats whom we take for granted. It is just like when Imran was there in the Pak team, the bowling stars went on to become ATGs while the new talented bowlers of Pak are completely losing their ways as they don't have anyone to guide them. Their playing with these ATGs helped them be what they are today. Lara could have guided new players and made West Indies stronger.

 

He chose to run away and after that for a long time, not a single batsmen, even talented ones could find their feet in international cricket

Actually, it was true. What the gentleman Nasser did after that in the commentary box was worse, he insulted in SS by sidelining him during commentary. 

 

It is not like as if Nasser is a saint. He also acted up equally if not worse. And not to forget, he called India's threats of pulling out of the Aus tour in that 2007-08 series down under as an insult to cricket or something like that. He has been far from civil and very critical of Indian cricket.

The hallmark of a true champion is to know when to quit, to go out on top. I can excuse him playing the England series, but he should have retired after that knowing that he did not have it in him any more. Instead he went laboring for over 2 more years!! As far as mentoring, that can be done in other ways, not at the expense of ruining your legacy. And yes, when he has given his 110% for his country for 20+ years, there is no harm in being selfish to preserve one's legacy. Needless to say, I was deeply disappointed with SRT lingering around post WC until he actually hung up his boots. He did not have even one comeback hundred during this time. Heck, even my childhood idol SMG played the innings of his lifetime in his last innings as a test batsman.

Shastri talks a lot of nonsense.  But he wasn't too far off the mark.  Nasser isn't jealous of the IPL, but a lot of former English players are nakedly jealous and resentful.  A textbook example is Botham.  Another sore loser is Atherton.  

 

I will say that Nasser is a quality TV commentator and analyst - brings a lot more insight to the table than most former players doing the same job.
