What do you guys think would be a good average/strike rate for him to achieve overseas?

I remember in an earlier thread people said they consider an average of 28-30 is good for pacers currently, mostly because the changing nature of pitches. I suppose that should hold true for spinners as well. Spinners generally have higher averages/strike rates anyway, so would something like a 34 average be considered good now for spinners overseas?

More than averages and SR he will have to contribute with some good performances whenever conditions are little bit favorable for him. Oval in Eng, Durban in SA and so on, at least 1 performance in each tour where bowls as the leader of the pack and get a 5-fer.

Apart from that my expectation is that he chips in regularly with 1-2 wickets in other innings. One of the problems India face is that bowlers go missing completely sometimes. More than individual performances they all need to perform as unit. 45/1, 80/2 100/3 - these type of performances bowlers need to give in more consistently with big performances here and there.

Some people are being just ridiculous in saying Ashwin does not perform overseas, other than Australia he has hardly played anywhere else to make any judgments on him.

In Australia he missed out in Adelaide test  which had most help for spinners he got absolute flat tracks and by his own admission he improved a lot after that tour.

What we are witnessing is just phenomenal performance by a bowler who is on top of his game. The drift and dip he is getting is just awesome. He does not need any raging bunsen burners  to be successful anymore.

Ashwin has many things going for him.But really the batsmanship against spin has been poor worldwide.I am waiting how he bowls against cook who last time swept him easily .

Bhajji is coming across like a sore loser by saying negative things about pitches. He should be last person talking about pitches, his overseas record is nothing to write home about either. Ashwin is dominating good batsmen which I have not seen even Kumble  do it .

Sorry bhajji may be sore loser but the Batting line up he bowled against was the one of the best of all time.

That was in one series, one great series does not make him ATG. I always liked Bhajji  as he was feisty but during later half of his career he became so predictable.

Ashwin will be tested later by England and Australia. But don't underestimate NZ they have done exceptionally well here even though the results are not there.

He performed well against aus throught out his career .The quality of batsmanship was far ahead it is now.Ashwin is excellent no doubt but bhajji was good too at his peak.

Thats not even an achievement or something to boast of. He's well ahead of Kohli or any current Indian cricketer in tests for that matter.

Wrong comparison @Temujin Khaghan

Kohli is an ODI legend, not even close to Test legend. Kohli has improved in Tests and is a MUCH better batsman now, but not a Test legend. Perhaps (if comparing with batsman) - Ashwin needs to be compared (if he is consistent for another 5-6 years) with Test legend batsmen like Dravid, Laxman, SRT. But we can only do so if he is consistent for extended number of years, which is a VERY tough ask.

Don't think he performed well in 2004. Problem with bhajji was he would get disappointed soon if he didn't get any wickets and he bowl faster deliveries.

iam talking about "when they end their careers" ...

obviously kohli will end his career with 10K test runs and he will have some stature in the hall of fame of test cricket

i just said that definitely ashwin will be placed on a higher pedestal as a test cricketer at that point...

forget about sachin, dravid... iam not interested in comparing ashwin with laxman and sehwag yet

because he is yet to win us games in aus, eng and sa

when he plays a part in overseas wins in those 3 countries we can think of comparing him with vvs, sehwag and later dravid and sachin

for all his achievements, ashwin is still only an Indian great

waiting for him to make a statement in oz, eng and sa and become a legit All time great

i hope he fulfills his potential and ends his career with nothing less than 5000 runs and 600 wickets...

hopefully...

Zaheer record is not far away, 10 more test at home the 3 test in sl and after SA tour SL comes to India for 3 test series

Zaheer record would be gone by then.

Will easily go ahead of kapil, to beat kumble he has to do well in overseas.

Maybe (if all odds favors him) Kapil but I think Kumble is a bit far-fetch for him. then again, the guy only played about 40 ish match compared to both kumble and kapil.

It isn't that obvious. Kohli has 3500 runs in 48 tests. He may need 90-100 more test to score 7000 runs. That means playing till age of 36-37 at same rate which isn't so common.
