How bad is Rohit Sharma's bowling?

There was a time when India had very good part time bowling options in Sachin, Saurav, Viru, Yuvi and Raina.

None of the current Indian top order batsmen are anywhere near the above mentioned players when it comes to bowling.

Rohit Sharma was supposed to be this world class part time off spinner having started his career as an off spinner.

How bad really is his bowling? He doesn't get a chance to bowl even when there is such dearth of part timers in the team. Even the likes of Vijay, Kohli and Jadhav are preferred over Rohit to roll their arms over.

This thread is like one of those click bait links or sponsored content  you see when browsing the internet.....There will be a pic of a famous A list celebrity and have a title that says "sad he/she passed away" or show a photo shopped picture and say "Plastic surgery gone wrong"...Yoi know it is not true but you are tempted to click anyways.

However I like the OP's posts....He is a good poster and so out of respect and as a favor I will try to legitimize this thread by bringing in some cricketing common sense and some basic cricketing acumen 101.

  • Rohit is the designated 6 hitter in the team....The number of 6's he has hit in the last 1 or 2 years are just surreal....You will almost think it is a typo or do a double take when you see his 6's numbers in all formats.......constant 6 hitting messes up your back...While on TV Rohit might make it look like a piece of cake lofting a 150K bowler for a 85m 6,his spine is disintegrating a little every time......This happens to all 6 hitters...Dhoni,Gayle,Mccullum all have bad backs....What does this have to do with bowling-Well this is why you need to apply cricketing logic 101 here....duh you need a healthy back to bowl...simple.
  • Next .... he started his career as a off-spinner prodigy....so Ashwin started as a opening batsman...does it mean his batting ability is questioned because he plays in the lower middle order? This is where cricketing common sense not to be confused with cricketing acumen comes into picture.
  • If ICC does changes the rule that all unorthodox off spin action should be banned...Rohit might be the last living off spinner on earth.....The guy has a text book action and probably the best action since Swann...no disrespect to Ash as I think Ash despite a legit action and incredible talent with the ball doesn't have a very elegant bowling run-up.
  • Finally the guy has a IPL hattrick and has delivered with the ball every single time he has been thrown the ball...got wickets in England and Australia of all places with a very healthy average for a part-timer...so you need to use Cricketing curiosity 101 to question here that is he carrying some injuries? How is his spinning finger? How much will this affect his world class batting and fielding etc.

Hope this puts an end to the debate about Rohit's contribution with the ball.....The guy is a gun bowler but unfortunately circumstances are preventing him from bowling and right now we need him for bigger things.

Every line is a gem, this Post actually degrades rohit sharma who is a proper batsman by calling him a designated six hitter.

And gun bowler, wonder why do u come up with the arguments when we have ripped apart each n every argument form his ipl hat-rick to his non existent bowling talent.

N bout ur excuses coz of his cirrcumstances............even u have started to make excuses. Nothing on earth has happened to him

Here is his interview post last match where he himself said he is expected to bowl and was disappointed not to get bowl

http://www.bcci.tv/videos/id/2901/hitmans-diary-rohit-in-a-tte-tte-with-hardik-and-kedar

Stop making excuses - finger problem back problem:phehe::phehe::phehe:

Yuvi, sanath, pollard and many others were big hitter and they yet they bowled their quotas and had bundle of wkts.

  • Off spinner prodigy:laugh1::laugh1::laugh1:- find me an article where he was considered as an off spinner prodigy ill give u bundle of articles on actual prodigies.

Even Ajith Chandila has ipl hat trick......who ajith chandila ?????? exactly my point........

He got a wicket in both Australia and England without even having much practice......and that too both times of top order players....You don't get wickets in Aus and England without having any talent...can you imagine if he starts bowling on these pitches in India.

We already have capable spinners to do that...so why risk one of  your best catcher/fielder's fingers and one of your batsmen's back and shoulders

Nothing wrong in being designated 6 hitter...Rahane is the designated crisis expert or Pujara/Vijay designated sheet anchor.....doesn't make one a better or lesser player.

Dhoni is Rohit's close friend...in fact Rohit is one of the few international cricketers invited to Dhoni's wedding...so Dhoni knows Rohit's skills inside out...Dhoni likes to use part timers so maybe Dhoni realizes that Rohit has some injuries being an accomplished 6 hitter himself.

Ajith Chandila the guy banned for fixing? pretty sure had he not been caught he would have had a lucrative IPL career too...so what?

Will he get into double digits atleast forget about bowling..

serious question do you know what "double digits" means purely from an arithmetic perspective? his last 2 scores where 14 and 15 and while they were not great scores...they look like double digits to me.

Or are you thinking 2 in the 10's place is double digits?

Do u know what prodigy is in that case, means u have achieved something to be called one like prithvi shaw, sarfraz younger brother , armaan jaffer, tendulkar kambli did. Did he do something or achieved something with his off spin to be called a prodigy

PAndya was a leg spinner till few yrs ago so was he the next leg spin prodigy

Dhoni or kohli, kumble, sachin  were they fast bowling prodigy coz they bowled in nets

The only shit i read on those article was-

“He would focus more on his bowling skills, but things slowly started changing. Gradually, he realized that he was more of a batsman. That clearly changed his perception for the game,” Patel reminisced.

:giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle::cry1:

On these two lines u call him a prodigy ....really:wall::wall::wall:

Did he even take a fifer against any school to be even called that. U want me to give u articles or even videos of these prodigies where they were told as next big thing

talking about his 1-2 wkts  in Aus nz well many part timers would have that.

He still has a perfect action almost Swanesque, delivered every time he bowled....the fact is he doesn't bowl in IPL either where he takes wickets for fun including a hattrick which means clearly he has a back/shoulder/spinning finger problem and he is too valuable an asset to risk injury as he is needed more for his batting.

So how did the other spinners leave alone part timers do in Aus and Eng(not Nzl) btw...2 of the strongest test teams in the world.

Again he has a hattrick at a competitive level like it or not.

Cricinfo doesn't have school cricket records, right now it is just hearsay that he ran through lineups with the ball at the school level.

1.Even avishkar salvi had action like Mcgrath was he even 0.09% of mcgrath

2. About part timers-

  • Sachin took 3 wkts in Adeilade where we won in 2003
  •  Sehwag perfomance in Australia in 2007-08
53 16/01/2008 Australia WACA Ground 2nd A C Gilchrist (b) 2/24 83.38 3.14 16 43.63
          B Lee (c V V S Laxman)
54 24/01/2008 Australia Adelaide Oval 1st R T Ponting (b) 2/51 80.44 3.10 18 41.61

3. No he has no issues, When he was played in ranji during IND-Sa test series he bowled a lot of overs

19 overs in single innings and was non effective

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ranji-trophy-2015-16/engine/records/averages/batting_bowling_by_team.html?id=10281;team=1654;type=tournament

RG Sharma 1 2 19.0 4 61 0 - - - 3.21 - 0 0 0 0

So again dont make excuses, he is lazy.

4. Here are prodigies perfomances

http://indianexpress.com/article/print/sarfaraz-439-armaan-498-prithvi-shaw-546-the-mumbai-conveyor-belt-rolls-on/

Show me what gr8 rohit did that he was the off spin prodigy. There would be nothing cause he didnt do anything

Nothing he just rolled his arm over doesnt make him the next big spinner.

IF thats the case lets expect some shane warne stuff from pandya

Look at the gun bowlers 1st class bowling record

First-class 81 64 2104 1132 24 4/41 5/85 47.16 3.22 87.6 1 0 0
List A 217 70 1367 1162 30 4/28 4/28 38.73 5.10 45.5 1 0 0
Twenty20 236 57 628 817 29 4/6 4/6 28.17 7.80 21.6 1 0

0

What a terrible record of gun bowler at 1st class level

5.  Now here is somethinge more about his injury excuse, till last year he wanted to become a seaming all rounder doesnt that cause more back issues

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/rohit-sharma-wants-to-become-allrounder-practising-seam-bowling/1/479164.html

Either ur giving a excuse of his fitness issues or he talking trash about becoming a seaming all rounder .

Truth is even if he could bowl u need to practice in nets, both captain who have so much faith in him has no confidence in his bowling . Infact he himself doesnt bowl his lethal bowling in ipl.

@maniac

there is a bad news for you .. Rohit is half telugu and not 100% telugu :hehe:

Nope not true......only difference is his mom and her family are actually from Vizag but his father comes from a telugu speaking family settled in Maharashtra.

If the Sharma surname is confusing you...then here is some cultural lesson

It is a known fact that Telugu people usually have long names...In many cases they have a Last Name as well as a caste identifier.

For eg; Nara Chandrababu Naidu-Naidu is not his last name it is Nara with Naidu representing what caste he is from.

Similarly Reddy as well.

Now there are some caste names/extensions like Yadav,Choudhary,Sharma,Shastri,Rao etc which are common to Telugu people as well as in North India.

So settling down in Maharashta for a while has probably eliminated the actual last name for Rohit's family just leaving behind Sharma....just like lot of people think Reddy is Sameera Reddy's last name but it probably is not...just teh influence of settling in the North.

Anyway it doesn't matter if Rohit is 50%,0% or 100% Telugu.....we need to be proud of  and celebrate this once in a generation player....just like Sachin,Amitabh,Rajnikant,Dravid etc are national icons and don't belong to any state anymore :proud:
