Ok, enough of Rahane in ODIs. This experiment (even in backup squad for ODIs is done and over).

Yes, main openers are injured, but can try a newbie youngster.

He is a VERY GOOD TEST player, and keep him like M. Vijay in the Test XI.

Absolutely. He is a great test player but simply not cut out for ODIs .

Him at no 4 was a major reason for our struggles in recent times as well.

Hopefully he is dropped for next 2 ODIs and we try some youngster

Rahane can be in the team for overseas ODIs when you need players with good technique. But on this pattas there are much better players than him. Great test player though.

ODI wickets overseas are roads as well.

At some point he is going be a liability like in World T20 SF.

Both Rahane and Rohit are slow starters, can't have two slow starters in today's ODI game. And Rahane's hasn't got Rohit's capability to accelerate

There was one series in England where Rahane looked the part opening the batting but unfortunately hasn't been able to replicate that ever since.

He is a class act and it's just a simple matter of him not trusting his ODI game, i.e. as soon as he gets bogged down, a big, high risk shot comes along which quite often leads to his downfall. The same can be said for Rohit however he has the luxury of some mammoth scores behind him so he has a much longer rope in the side.

Probably his inclusion in this ODI squad (and XI) is to simply confirm that... They've tried him at the top and at 4..

Given the class act that he is in the longer format, it is one last chance to try him at the top of the ODI XI where he is normally seen to be comfortable.. But, he has failed miserably this series.. They may still play him for the remaining matches and drop him from the squad if there is no improvement..

Could see this happening a mile off....never understood why so many on this forum were ever keen to include Chepu and Rahane in ODI squads. Why spread your stars so thinly and insist on playing them across all formats? 1 billion plus population!

Yes. I don't see him getting selected in the squad of 15 again after this series. Most likely will be dropped when squads for next 2 games are announced. KL Rahul is the backup opener or groom him as #5. That will depend on him and selectors as well as management. Ideally, he should be opening but Dhawan is still gun in odis. Since KL has the power game he can be utilized at #5.

Here is the possible playing XI going forward -

Rohit

Dhawan

Kohli

Dhoni

KL

Pandey

Pandya

Ashwin

Jadeja

Umesh/Shami

Bumrah

Or

Rohit

Dhawan

Kohli

Dhoni

Pandey

Raina/jadhav

Pandya

Ashwin

Jadeja

Umesh/Shami

Bumrah

Or

Rohit

KL

Virat

Dhawan

Dhoni

Pandey

Raina/jadhav

Pandya

Ashwin

Jadeja

Umesh/Shami

Bumrah

Rahane is an excellent fielder. Better than most except Jadeja..but that's not enough to be part of squad let alone playing 11. Remaining 3 in the squad will be back up bowlers in case some bowler gets injured or out of form.

I am looking beyond MSd may be after a year or so.. We will then need an experienced batsmen at 4 who can hit the big shots..
Rohit sharma can be brought back and Kl should keep wickets in england. Rahne cant bat anywhere but open. Raina Makes the cut for bowling.

Rahane/Dhawan/Kohli/Rohit/Rahul/Raina/Pandya/Ashwin/Bhuvi/Shami/Bumrah

Jadega
Umesh

Mishra

Manish
