Most if not all Indian fans know and appreciate Dhoni's qualities. And are clear-eyed about his short-comings. As if all other players are perfect. Even our best ODI bat has his limitations. But we celebrate his strengths because he gets the job done with his composite skill-set. Problem for Dhoni is that he was a very different player early on, so the decline is hard to accept for some. For a bitter few, ALL the issues with the Indian team in the last few years are to be blamed on him because he was this all-seeing, all-controlling omnipotent skipper. Most are not that silly though. Its just the noxious farts of a couple of posters polluting the atmosphere... sscomp32 1
Yoda-esque Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Definitely detect a loss of confidence from MSD . He kept changing bats and helmets, signs that he is looking for external factors to boost his confidence. This innings was by no means a statement, but rather an innings of self-conviction. I suppose he will retire by next year, don't see any reason for him to keep continuing since the WC is still a few years out. velu 1
maniac Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Well it is commendable if a young cricketer does a honest analysis of what he is lacking but an over the hill player talking about his flaws means he needs to take a hint as to when to retire. Anyways good knock by him yesterday.....He did his job....played a brisk knock without stupid strategies of taking it to the last ball,Tuk Tuking part timers etc....This is more of the Dhoni we all want to see....but still the odd game at home against a relatively weaker attack...but I don't think he will be useful against tougher attacks in tougher conditions...time to call it a day before he loses respect as a ODI player too....Dhoni is India's best wk-bat of all time...a real gem but by the time he retired everyone said Good riddance rather than a legend ha sretired...don't want his ODI career to go the same route. velu, Mosher, Lannister and 1 other 4

NameGoesHere Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Well I am writing this, since the thread has moved from a specific - Dhini's power game- to the general, Dhoni's contribution at a macro level. I have said this earlier, but not in the declining arc of Dhoni's career, so may as well say it here- for what it is worth (nothing, I'd warrant). Dhoni is a leader in the classical sense of that term- he had the right stuff that could take a team beyond SRT/ Dravid/ Ganguly with few hiccups, he had the capacity to absorb incredible pressure and deliver. I think our criticism should acknowledge these facts. Few of those who criticise him have remotely been in his position, even if we assume this includes the comparatively minor pressure of handling a last-minute changed deliverable at work. But that's how it goes. We are a passionate, unreasoning people. Dhoni is a better leader than all of us who are commenting here with such abandon. Fellows, I say this with humility being an incompetent myself, get a sense of your own competence before you start taking off on him. You may find yourself unable to live in his shoes for five seconds. Ankit_sharma03, Shunya and sandeep 3

By the same logic,we have no right to criticise Dinda,Vinay Kumar etc either as they have achieved a lot more than any of us on this forum.

I have no issues with genuine critiques of Dhoni's batting, his captaincy, his tactical choices - he has made plenty of errors along the way. I will never forget Dhoni's indefensible promotion of Jadeja over an in their primes Yuvi and Yusuf in that T20 WC chase against England. And I hold him responsible for our timid batting strategy that I believe is holding our team back from being genuine contenders for the next WC. His Test captaincy has been average or sub-par plenty of times. But there's a difference in objective, clear-eyed criticism, and senseless venting and emotional bashing. Now on cue, that NG idiot will post another diabtribe about how he feels his Dhoni-bashing is "in revenge" for Tendy bashing or some such nonsense. NameGoesHere 1
maniac Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 So if Dhoni is so honest in his analysis...why is he still hanging around the T20 Squad, where power hitting is required? Looks like he was self-aware about al his F ups in recent times so one good innings and he comes with such statements......at least he is smart enough not to show any fake bravado here. Anyways keeping 2019 in mind and also 2020 when the next Wt20 will be held....Time to look beyond Dhoni.....As much as his fanboys want to see Dhoni play till the end of time...he does not have it in him to last for 4-5 years. Champions Trophy should be his swan song considering there won't be as much pain as losing that one compared to the world cups. express bowling, Mosher and Rasgulla 2 1

We don't need an accumulator in T20s, and its better for the team to audition/groom his replacement in T20s sooner rather than later. I'm really hoping Samson puts up big numbers with bat and gloves this IPL. maniac 1
Lannister Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 He can stick it up his honest analysis where the sun doesn't shine. The time for such self-assessments is already past for him. Yuvraj Singh, who won us both the World cups, didn't get such chances. Why is he expecting a special treatment for himself? tweaker 1

Yuvraj singh avg 4.75 in Ind-aus series yet he played 2 series after. So check ur stats Dont let me get started with the number of catches he dropped every series In past 4 yrs yuvi avg 19 and dhoni's avg wud easily be 40+ Go n complain to franchise like DD n RCB who also threw yuvraj singh after 1st yr only. And btw about chances go pick both their perfomance by every year and see the diff. Ull find 4-5 good yrs in yuvi's career and one bad yr in dhoni's career. tweaker, sandeep and sscomp32 3

We have lost something like 14 matches under Dhoni in the last 2 years and this is how his stats read. Average of 27 with a strike rate of 78. This must be the lowest of all if we compare with all other players who bats at the similar position. Don't be a blind fool like other trolls we see over here. Mosher and tweaker 2
