Anyone who has seen him bat in the last 6 months will know that he is hitting big shots at will while playing long innings and has shown the ability to tackle and hit pace and bounce. Not talking about blazing starts but long, responsible innings at a high SR....which is the need of the hour.....so that there is someone other than Kohli to take primary responsibility to allow the others to play around them. If one fails, we still have the other one to bank upon. We will then see MSD play more freely and Pandey and Co. can play with less pressure. Modern cricket is different.....English batsmen will start attacking from ball 1.......Rahul might be in great form but he will still start steadily, may be a little faster over Rohit,Rahane and Dhawan......He is more in the Virat Kohli mould. Yes his addition will strengthen the side no doubt but he is not the missing link. In Aus early this year both Rohit and Kohli got great starts but our team lost it's way towards the end on many occasions...we have a lot of flaws with our modern approach. Rohit or Virat can be excused if they make steady starts because they both have shown the ability to get you those 15-20+ run overs at times when set.....2 other players who have are Dhoni and Raina and they both have lost their way....these days 15-20 run overs are more frequent and we don't have too many players to do that.

ODI batsmen have higher SR in general in this period. Our top players have been playing for long and .....to get a clear picture....you need to compare their SR for the last 3 years. Also, it is important to demarcate between the SR of No.1 to No. 4....where SR of 90+ in the last 3 years is good And the SR of batters from No.5 to No.8....where a SR of 105+ in the last 3 years is preferred.

That is a challenge with the England team because they went into a complete overhaul mode after 2015 WC...so just over the last year.3 year data will not be available Sometimes statistics may not give you the entire picture...if you have watched the England team play in LOI formats in recent times, you will know. Yes you may make an argument that some of these players are fairly new and may lack experience...but if it is a flat pitch these batsmen will take the pitch out of equation....on a competitive pitch too they are a threat because they have bowlers who hit 90+ and also good LOI spinners......I still think Indian team should be sentenced to some jail term for throwing wickets to Ali but him and that Rashid guy are decent spinners in the LOI format as well. express bowling 1

I don't disagree. Our team lacks the modern LOI approach of high SR batting. But, to do that, we need atleast 2 pillars in our batting. I am not really thinking about Rahul opening but batting at No.4. Dhawan should be given the task of attacking viciously from ball 1....even Rohit....same with Pandey, Jadhav, Pandya and Axar....but 2 solid high SR, long innings pillars in between are required for that. 5 minutes ago, maniac said: That is a challenge with the England team because they went into a complete overhaul mode after 2015 WC...so just over the last year.3 year data will not be available Sometimes statistics may not give you the entire picture...if you have watched the England team play in LOI formats in recent times, you will know. Are you saying Indian ODI/T20 line up is better than England? or are you saying that once Rahul comes back,England team is going to be a no biggie. No disrespect but let me clarify here before I know what I am debating exactly. The first line I said in the above post was, " I don't disagree, our team lacks the modern approach to LOI batting "....so that means I am not really debating but agreeing with you.....that the England ODI team is better than us especially in terms of modern approach to ODI batting. My next point was a way to reach that modern approach in a make-shift way .....the make-shift approach necessitates from the fact that there is no time left for the ODI series with England. We must create 2 solid, long innings at high SR pillars at No.3 and No.4, in Kohli and Rahul and tell some of the other batsmen at the top and bottom to start attacking from ball 1 and play around the 2 pillars. My next point was about the bowling pace of the 2 teams, which i don't think is much different apart from Mark Wood. Infact, they don't have a pacer like Bumrah. So...in a nut-shell...our problem is that we don't have even a couple of real high SR batters that modern day ODIs demand and we must make a makeshift arrangement to create that quickly by the method I mentioned or some other approach. ( Please check the relative SR of the 2 teams in the last 3 years that I posted. ) Edited October 26, 2016 by express bowling maniac 1

This is why I said statistics are deceptive....Joe Root is just above Rahane on the list but the guy can be as good as Kohli in a chase and can up his game based on situation...there is no comparison between him and Rahane. Similarly Raina has a high S/R and is 3rd on the list...can't remember what was Raina's last big score....on the other hand Butler has those stats scoring 50's and 100's in the last 15 odd overs both at home and away.

Yes...but we get a general idea that we don't have a batter like Butler, with SR of 119 and average of 42.....and the need to find one ASAP. The list shows the need for a far higher SR among one or two batsmen in a team .....which our team is somehow in denial of. Edited October 26, 2016 by express bowling
putrevus Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 Why is KL Rahul upgrade over Dhawan in LOIs. Dhawan has two 50s and a hundred in his last three innings. How is heck will KL Rahul better that record. Rahul if he plays should be no 5 and Pandey no 6 or vice versa. People are under estimating England in tests if India wins the series I will be very happy.

One more thing, It tells you how batting has become easier in ODIs overseas. Imagine the type of pitches we used to get in ODIs in Australia and SA in 90s and early to mid 2000s. Yes...but the SA pitches were quite difficult on our last 2 tours. Another thing is, these stats were in reply to whether Kohli is scoring outside Asia. What is important is that our batters score all over the world, on the pitches they are getting. That will win us matches. Edited October 27, 2016 by express bowling Ankit_sharma03 1
