Good thread. Even though bit early, but we have to get things started for overseas.

To me, I have some concern about Pandya's selection. I rather give chance to somone like Dhawal Kulkarni who can hold a bat and could be a better 4th seamer also in the team.

And Also I would like to keep Varun Aaron in reserves for South Africa if he is fit around that time.

I must mention that for a tour like South Africa, we are better of playing 4 seamers-1 spinner combo or 3 pacers-2 spinners(jadeja/Ash) instead of trying a makeshift player like Pandya who might bowl much and also might not score much. We need batting over there in South Africa to click. Lot of games are low scoring. You can score 300 in the first innigs and still easily win by big margins. Hence, it is important to keep batting strong there. Adding Pandya will not help us.

What's up with your obsession for trundlers? If Bhuvi wasn't enough, now you want Kulkarni in the team. You will make a fine replacement for Dhoni. I read somewhere that you play Cricket, why don't you apply for the job.

You want Pandya? I rather play Dhawal for Pandya, that is all I suggested if you want to play Pandya.

I have zero expectations from Pandya in test as both batsman and bowler hence when someone mentioned Pandya, that is when I mentioned Dhawal's name instead.

I could care less for Dhawal. Don't like Pandya either.

I think that ICC FTP schedule has some minor changes and errors. If you check India's schedule of 2015, it will show that India hosted Lanka in 2015 for 3 tests, but actually we toured them for 3 tests in the month of August, 2015. So this Sri Lankan series should actually be a home series as I think BCCI and Lankan board swapped the series I think.

Also, another error it shows that England are playing 5 ODI's and 1 twenty20. In fact they are playing 3 ODI's and 3T20s next month.

Not really. We swapped the 3 tests at home to away in 2015 as compensation for Srilanka touring us for 5 odis in place of west Indies when then abandoned the tour .No mistake in FTP .

We tour Lanka in 2017 as part of FTP

That is right but the FTP is still not updated. They need to fix the changes like the swapped series and the England Odi's and twenty20.

I won't be surprised if the Lankan tour gets cancelled.

We have a core of a good team to put a fight against SA .Our major problem can be injuries to main players .Our SA tour our Kohli,Ashwin,Shami,Vijay,Pujara,Rahane should be fit.

We have a good pace attack of Shami ,Ishant,Umesh, who can be handful against SA batsman

Pandya has a shoulder fracture...yikes..thats gotta slow him down.

No that's just a hairline fracture, not too serious.

Given his build, he can easily run into over-use injuries in the future if he starts working hard on bowling long spells.  Yeah, he works very hard on fitness, but that doesn't automatically translate into endurance.  Especially if he doesn't have the right guidance.  And its very easy to prioritize strength training over endurance.

Gujju Lukdya has a long way to go before he turns into a legit test selection candidate.  But If he does, and does well - not much will stop Team India from bulldozing teams overseas.

It's not an overuse injury. He got hit on shoulder in the nets.

No love for Dhawal man. I won't even pick him in my ODI team but for a tour like South Africa, if a team needs someone to bat,I don't trust Pandya at all. He will be able to negotiate Steyn because Steyn will be untouchable with his swing and then one bounce from Philander or Abbott or Morkel will send him back. And we will call for his head.

I have seen Dhawal bat and he can hold and form p'ships. But seriously, I won't have either of them in my team. I rather have two spinners(Jadeja/Ashwin) all tour who can bat well.

You will have to take risk.this is the way to make an allrounder. on India A tour to Australia, he did show that he can hold his with both bat and ball.

Yes, but right now his character reminds me that of Sreesanth. His harkatein, etc reminds me a lot of Sreesanth. I want him to score his first 70-80 run knock in ODI before I can pick him as all rounder in Test. May be after a year or two. Just my feeling about him.

We are playing SL again? :wall:

Yes. Better to play some tests albeit different conditions, than no test before a big series like South Africa. Good for us. Lets rack up some more away test wins.

Ideal time to plan for an important away tour. Good thread .  We should plan in advance.

Some observations --

  •  Pant won't have the opportunity to play many more 4 day / 5 day games before the SA series team selection.  His Ranji season is over and  A  team series can give him the opportunity but usually there are not that many  4 day matches.  Not sure he will be ready as a test keeper by October, when the team is selected.
  • If Pant plays, then I would  bat him at No. 6,  Ashwin at  No. 7  and Pandya at  No.8
  • Creating back-ups for possible injuries of fast bowlers and even batsmen, should be our priority.  Mukund is perhaps the best back-up and should bat in the middle-order even if such a batter is injured.   We need to  try him out in advance. A chance was missed when  Gambhir was brought in.  Need to find another solid test batter for back-up.  Rohit won't do in SA.
  • Developing another all-condition fast bowler is important....and the process should start now...pick the contenders in dead rubber tests and even bilateral ODIs.  We need to play Shardul Thakur, Nathu Singh and Aniket Chaudhuri in an attempt to do this.
  • Bringing in a wrist spinner....like Kuldeep, for overseas series, would be prudent.

The dead rubber match against England should be used to try Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur.

The test against  Bangladesh should be used to try Mukund, Pant, Shardul Nathu and Kuldeep.

Playing XI against Bangladesh in the next test we play --

Rahul

Mukund

Pujara

Kohli

Rahane

Pant

Ashwin

Jadeja

Kuldeep

Shardul

Nathu

It would test our bench strength and develop key new players without disturbing our core test players in Asia.

It should but our useless selectors will never do that.

No doubt we go with Saha and Patel as our WK to Srilanka/SA

Aaron should be in the pool of pacers and should get a chance if he is fit.

I don't want India to over-experiment in the Bong test match.  I want a ruthless stomping.  Them Toyger fans and even some of their players need a bit of that medicine.

Ashwin, Kohli, Pujara, Jadeja, Jayant will be good enough for that purpose.

What harqat of his reminds u of sreesanth.

Is it wrong to be expressive on field. Is there a rule book that says u can express only in a certain way to be successful.

Sreesanth problem wasnt being expressive but it was his distracted mind.

Btw that sreesanth bowled beautifully in SA.

Hi everyone, I would just like to share my thoughts and opinions on our next overseas test series and what we need to do to compete and hopefully win! I believe that a team like this can compete in SA:

Vijay

Rahul
Pujara
Kohli (C)
Rahane
Pandya
Pant (WK)
Ashwin
Bhuvi
Shami
Ishant

We have to look for a pool of fast bowlers

Umesh , Aaron, Bhuvi, ishant all have been avg for long. They all have their limitations and inconsistency.

Time to look for some match winners in bowling unit.

This team can only win if u have one match winner fast bowler with Shami and 3rd one can be one above depending on form, fitness and condition

Time to explore among these- Nathu, Rajpoot, Sran, Aniket, Avesh, Shardul

Enough of Garbage like Dhawal (U take him to Sa and I bet he ll get a phainty of his life, with his length Abdv will smash sixes by pulling of 130k lifeless bouncers.)

Ishant, Aaron should really look to go for a county season since they wont fit LOI for near future. (Ishant can learn something from virat's attitude)

Jayant Should also try to go to county and look to explore his game, The guy has a seriously good temperament while batting.

Also We need to start looking for 3 backup batsman-

As Pujara, Rohit hasnt had much success in overseas

Vijay , Rahane doesnt put runs throughout the series

Rahul playing away from the body would be tested in overseas by the likes of quality bowlers and pitches

Injuries and form can happen any time.
