BeautifulGame Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 President Donald Trump’s clash with Silicon Valley over immigration is about to become even more contentious. After the new president banned refugees and travelers from seven predominantly Muslim countries, Google, Facebook, Salesforce, Microsoft and others railed against the move, saying it violated the country’s principles and risked disrupting its engine of innovation. Trump’s next steps could strike even closer to home: His administration has drafted an executive order aimed at overhauling the work-visa programs technology companies depend on to hire tens of thousands of employees each year. If implemented, the reforms could shift the way American companies like Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc. and Apple Inc. recruit talent and force wholesale changes at Indian companies such as Infosys Ltd. and Wipro Ltd. Businesses would have to try to hire American first and if they recruit foreign workers, priority would be given to the most highly paid. “Our country’s immigration policies should be designed and implemented to serve, first and foremost, the U.S. national interest,” the draft proposal reads, according to a copy reviewed by Bloomberg. “Visa programs for foreign workers … should be administered in a manner that protects the civil rights of American workers and current lawful residents, and that prioritizes the protection of American workers -- our forgotten working people -- and the jobs they hold.” The foreign work visas were originally established to help U.S. companies recruit from abroad when they couldn’t find qualified local workers. In many cases, the companies are hiring for highly technical positions in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. But in recent years, there have been allegations the programs have been abused to bring in cheaper workers from overseas to fill jobs that otherwise may go to Americans. The top recipients of the H-1B visas are outsourcers, primarily from India, who run the technology departments of large corporations with largely imported staff. Full story Bloomberg Seems no stopping that orange buffon.Seriously what the f have you done America voting this narcissist. velu 1

Ind too would not accept people coming in from BD, Nepal, SL, etc., and take jobs of the locals based mainly on the willingness to work for relatively lower wages .... The issue with many folks from sub-con is that where ever they go, they start doing "Golmaal" gs and velu 2

There was a deal in 1990's wherein saudi agreed to sell petrol in dollars, in return for being left alone. Saudi's are in bed with the US basically.
Rajiv Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 But from an American POV, isnt he doing right by helping its own citizens first?, allow only when citizens are filled with jobs Imagine same thing in India, jobless coz. Bangladeshi wok for half price I think the man is evil but think from American born pov. I have been visiting US since 80s, seen influx of Indian pros, but in 2010 - I couldnt believe what I saw outside that jersey city station, it seemed like Indian college campus in trouser/sneaker/hanky combo. I was like itne log kaha se aa gaye,. My cousin pointed me backoffices of Wipeo, infosys etc and said yeh hain Indian L1, H 1 MechEng 1
MechEng Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 There are 60% chances I'm coming to US this fall 2017 for my MS. I'm bit confused what Trump is going to do with STEM grads.
coffee_rules Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 (edited) All others were EexecOrders, but this one, he is getting is passed through congress. It will not pass as there is significant $ spent by corporates on election of congress, hence the strategy. I doubt it will be passed in congress http://www.business-standard.com/article/current-affairs/h1b-reform-bill-introduced-in-us-house-of-representatives-117013100351_1.html In this strategy, he can blame the congress but still be viewed by his electorate as a hero. mishra Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Every government tries to curb abuse of various categories of Visa by tightening the rules, Nothing new. Its cap/nocap/number of VISA per year is what matters MechEng 1

The margins are already stretched for these companies and this is killer blow when they are in the middle of re-inventing and re model their business .

We worked a lot will rep lofgren. She is genuinely interested in helping high skilled people. This has lot to do with how Indian companies exploit h1b. We worked with her on high skilled immigrants waiting long in queue for green cards. You know who exploits green cards Indian companies as well. Tcs and cts sponsor lot of EB1C for green cards even for on site coordinators.

No. Indian Companies have become smarter they will be less on site resources. Also they sponsor lot of green cards from last couple of years. They might bring new people and sponsor them EB1c green cards. They will find loop holes.

Trump is going to reduce OPT which might affect your job prospects and if the bill passed it will be very difficult for companies to hire except for Silicon Valley companies who shell out the 130 k pays. For bill to pass it will take a lot it has to pass in congress and senate and president has to sign it. I don't this bill will pass there will lot of lobbying to kill the bill. Remember financials institutions have killed a bill that would put more restrictions on them after 2008. Edited January 31, 2017 by gattaca MechEng 1

The danger of revoking the OPT is that US will no longer be the destination for international students, including Ivy League schools. After all which person in the right state of mind will spend a fortune on education in a country where there are literally no employment/academic opportunities unless you're extremely good at what you do. Also, the local white Americans seem to detest college now, most think of it as debt slavery and which is why colleges rely heavily on international students for survival, especially the tier 2 colleges. randomGuy 1

Yes for masters specially. In my class there were only two Americans. One was of grand pa age and other in 30s very few Americans study beyond bachelors.

Infy, TCS , Wipro and TechM have a combined ~70,000 H1 resources in US , if you take avg salary paid now which is between 60-70k you are looking at cost of 3-4 billion dollars . Yes , a lot of work can be done from India , but these companies survive on billing their clients and large majority of on site resources are billed higher . This revenue model would not have worked for long , but they still had a good 3-5 years to re model themselves , it just makes things more difficult for them . My bet is , inorganic growth . you will see some big acquisitions from Indian companies , all of them are sitting on pretty good cash reserves ..Wipro has done some good buys albeit mid sized ones in last 12 months . I dont see any other way out . velu 1

I have my doubts on weather this will create jobs in the US . A lot of customers are setting up their own captives , in last 12 months I have heard of Mercedes , Lowes , JC penny , Shell , AstraZeneca which have either expanded or setup up new centres . So what ever's left of IT jobs may still find its way to India . velu and coffee_rules 2
