Shami is currently bowling in India's needs and generating good pace

"Running in at the fast bowlers' net were Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami - who, bowling mostly off a short run-up, was generating serious pace and seeming to be recovering fast enough from a troublesome right knee and hamstring to be back in contention for the third Test"

This guy needs to stay healthy and give us 2 more years. So tired of his injuries.

I would want 6 to 7 more years from him.  He has played only 3 years and a bit.

His first injury was aggravated due to playing him through World Cup 15 although he kept complaining of knee issues.   If he was allowed to miss that tournament , his knee injury would perhaps not have been aggravated.  Incompetent injury management from the team management of that time.

A sad tale.

An excerpt from an article on his injury

Mohammed Shami, who has been out of action since the World Cup, has revealed that he bowled through pain and injury during the tournament, and that the discomfort in his left knee began as early as during the first Test of India's tour of Australia. That Test match was played from December 9 to 13. India's last match in the country, the World Cup semi-final, was played on March 26. Between the two matches, swelling on Shami's knee kept making repeat appearances.

Two days before every World Cup match Shami would have fluids sucked out of the knee, then practise on the day before the match, and then play. India didn't want to risk the momentum they had built, Shami says. He himself didn't want to let the team down. After a point Shami was sure he would have to sit out for a long time so he pushed himself as far as he could. The prize in sight was too tempting to not go for, and Shami has statistically been one of the best ODI bowlers in the world over the last 18 months.

It was a bit of a vicious cycle: Shami was critical to India's success; the better he did, the more confidence India gained, the more they didn't want to risk changing the winning combination, the worse the injury got. Shami was India's second-highest wicket-taker at the World Cup, with 17 scalps at 17.29 and an economy rate of 4.81. Had he not sat out of the UAE game, he would have had every chance of taking more wickets than Umesh Yadav's 18.

Now Shami has had to undergo a surgery.

Shami training hard. He will be back for the 3rd test :nice:

Yes we need him back, he does not have a history of injury n this was minor, he to me could be Indias most successful pace bowler yet n could be lethal with improved Yadav, also he is young so has good 9 to 10 years ahead of him

Nowhere i has been mentioned that aggravated the injury.Players always play through the injuries particularly for big games with the help of pain killers. Its pretty natural.

If you play through injury, it will always aggravate it. Yes, players play through injuries but then they have to go through treatment too. Ishant also played through injuries on 2012 AUS tour and then had to undergo surgery missed IPL.

It was not one game but an entire tournament.

When you play with injury for that long, you aggravate it.

Tbf Shami should focus on his LOI career. We need a bowler like him there and that wouldn't put too much toll on him like test matches.

I think we can find decent bowlers for ODIs, which apart from WC not many are interested in. He is surely required in tests overseas where we don't have consistent performers.

i think Shami ko is series me nahi khilana chahiye. use aur time dena chahiye ta ki ekdam acche se recvoer hosake.

waise bhi injury se aate hi direct test me khilana sahi idea nahi hai.

dude, we have never had a bowler like him, all respect to Zaheer and Srinath. He is crucial in tests and he can play WC and prep series in LOI.

Shami is not a great LOI bowler.

Not in T20's but excellent  in ODI's...26.9 S/R and 25.00 average is like a gold-dust for an Indian seamer

very early in his career. HE has been like Sir Aggy, at times good then a lot of filth and got wickets even on filth.
