Cricketics
If we need to put 3 slips and a gully, whom would you have considering all our slip fielders are at most decent. Rahane is the only specialist who also is only good to spinners. Has dropped plenty of catches to seamers. Kohli has had his share of drop catches. Kohli seem to be perhaps a better slip fielder to seamers than spin bowlers, totally opposite to Rahane. But we have to pick from what we have, so which 3 you would put on slips? My 3 would be Rahane, Vijay, Kohli and Rahul at gully. If Rohit Sharma is there, I would replace Kohli with Rohit Sharma at slip. What does your slip cordon look like? Sandeep99
Vijay, Rahane, Ashwin - my 2 cents. But honestly, whoever it turns out to be, I just hope all our players are coached in this regard. You can't win test matches in Australia, England, South Africa or New Zealand if you can't take those! Cricketics and sandeep 2 Link to comment

Cricketics
This has to be important discussion as lot of posters have a lot to say about our slip fielders and fielding as a whole. Link to comment
sandeep
Why was Jaddu at 3rd slip, I don't understand. Heard Hussain say that Vijay has some back issues? Link to comment
express bowling
Vijay...Pujara....Rahane We need players who are patient and have the ability to concentrate for long periods without getting bored. Batsmen who have shown the tendency to stay at the crease for long periods, without scoring lots of runs, have often been the best slip fielders. jf1gp_1
KL rahul should also be there after all he is our backup keeper Link to comment
sandeep
I think tailunt if he plays, is also very decent in the slips.. Wonder why they didnt have Ash as 3rd slip instead of Jaddu. Link to comment
Lannister
Is Vijay really a safe catcher? I saw him drop one of the easiest catches I've ever seen, I think it was in the first Test match. This is one of the reasons we struggle to win in a place like England, where other teams have no such problems. Link to comment
express bowling
We must have designated fielders for specific fielding positions....based on the fielding strengths and weaknesses of individuals. The musical chair approach won't work. Jadeja is a brilliant fielder when not in a catching position and Kohli is excellent too.....but both are bad slip fielders. Jadeja should be at point. moniker
Ashwin should be in the slips. Dhoni came up with the idea to hide him there and it surprisingly clicked, he actually did pull off quite a few catches. Wonder why Kohli hasn't continued doing it. I think Vijay, Ashwin and Rahane should be in the slips over Kohli or Jadeja. Kohli is a covers and mid off kind of fielder, his fidgety nature doesn't suit close in catching at all. Jadeja is point/gully fielder, he too doesn't seem to have the temperament to stand in the slips. You have to be calm and composed to stand in the slips, not bursting with energy. Pujara seems to do well as a close in catcher to spinners, at short leg. Fielding at each position is an art in itself, the team management should let the players grow in their particular positions. Because its exhausting for a bowler to sit on the slips and concentrate on each and every ball, than be on the outfield and plan for your next over. Pretty much only Warne was a successful slip fielding bowler but even he sat in the slips sparingly and only to fast bowlers bowling in tandem (indicating he won't be required to bowl for a while). Slip fielders have to concentrate from the moment the bowler begins his run-up, outfielders can wait till the batsman is mid-shot to react. Our slip fielding has pretty much one candidate for sure : Rahane. Vijay has a back problem that is going to worsen if he sits on the slips very long and KL Rahul is not fit enough to play more than 2 tests in a row. Link to comment

fineleg
This not standing in regulation slip is a mistake. Dropping someone like Steve Smith is dropping the match, period. Rasgulla 1 Link to comment

Cricketics
Dhawan just dropped one. With south africa tour coming up, we will need good slip fielders. Rahane and Vijay can start but seriosuly Ashwin can’t be the choice. Ashwin hardly bends. Kohli has sucked so far in terms of slip fielding but he has still had lot of experience there and taken many catches there. So we have to stick with him unless we find third slip fielder. So I will use him everytime unless you know a better skip fielder than him and Rahane. I honestly don’t trust Pujara and Ashwin. Both are slow on the field and slip catching is all about reflexes and bending low and reacting fast and both Pujara and Ashwin are liability on the field due to their poor agility and this kind of approach won’t be good when standing on slip in Souh Africa. We do not have many good slip fielders to fast bowlers. Days of Laxman, Dravid, Tendulkar are gone. This is what we have for now. We have many who can stand to spinners, but not many to fast bowlers.
