Quote

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday said Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a "champion ODI player" but doubted if he is still that good in the shortest format.

"I am not too sure if Dhoni is a good T20 player. He is a champion ODI player but when it comes to T20 cricket, in 10 years, he has got one fifty and that's not the best record," Ganguly told India Today.

Ganguly's scathing comments came on the back Dhoni's ever-falling run in the shortest format of the game.

Dhoni, who has been relieved of captaincy duties by Rising Pune Supergiant and is playing for the first time as a player in the Indian Premier League, hasn't performed as per the expectations in the ongoing league.

With scores of 12 not out, 5 and 11 in the three IPL 10 games he has played so far for the Rising Pune Supergiant, the 35-year-old cricketer, regarded as India's most successful skipper across all formats, has failed to live up to the expectations of his fans.

Spot on. But I would like to add he was never a good T20 player. How he has held on to a spot in our XI for the past 10 years......Manmohan Singh the PM level qtiyapa. Of course Dhoni bhakts will downplay this very honest assessment of their hero, but can't be PC all the time.

Gangu teli being unusually mild here. Dhoni has not been a good player for past 24 months now. He needed to be cast aside yesterday.

Former cricketers rarely come out with as strong of a statement as Ganguly has about the current T20 captain.

Last T20 wc again he was our second best batsman FFS

This myth that he is not a good t20 batsman needs to stop.

If he is not, no one else is!

Against NZ he got the oppurtunity to win a game on his own but failed, made useless runs.

Against Pak,came and hit a six.

Against Bangladesh, failed to connect in the end.

Against Australia,he actually just ran, nothing much to talk about vis-s-vis hitting,Virat did it all alone.

Against WI,again he was trying convert 1s into 2s rather than hitting big.

My problem with him is if cannot start hitting straight away then he should have always been batting in top 4 for India instead of being a messiah and doing the role of finisher by stating there is no one in the country who can do that role.

He himself acknowledged the fact that he used more brains than brawn in this format, that was a self admission of him being an average T20 batsman, you are wasting your time defending him on this front.

So as a Dhoni fan who thinks he's a very good T20 batsman were you extremely satisfied with his performance (listed below) in the 2016 world cup? 89 runs with an average boosted by 4 sub-20 run not outs.

v NZ: 30 (30)

v Pak: 13* (9)

v BD: 13* (12)

v Aus: 18* (10)

v WI: 15* (9)

What about his 4*(7) in the 2014 World T20 final?

How many matches has he won for us in this format then?

I can easily name matches won by Raina,Rohit and even Yuvraj in old times

Team got bowled out for 79 but Dhoni(top scorer with 30) was the failure

Against Pak did not have much to do

Against Bangladesh failed to connect yes, so did most of our batsmen.

Against Aus he did what was needed. With Kohli playing like that he did not need to do anything extraordinary.

Against WI he was decent. Yes should've been better but hardly as bad as others barring Kohli.

Yes should bat at 4, agreed.

I am not saying he is legendary in this format. Just pointing out he is much better than others in the team.
