Sarfraz opener- Nope ........no way . Playing cheeky shots against old ball is diff to playing against new ball against quality bowling.

Why to try something that already has failed

Not saying Sarfaraz should open but Sarfaraz does not just play cheeky shots only. He has lately been generalised as a fancy shots player due to one innings of IPL being etched in people's minds.

For me every slot shud have options

1. Aggresive opener- Dhawan, Rahul, kishen, Pant

2. The one who can anchor-  Rohit, Rahul

3. Kohli

4. No.4- Rahul,Manish, iyer, pandey , hooda

5. Wk-batsman- Dhoni, pant, kishen, samson

6. Batsman + 6th bowler - Krunal, shankar

7- all rounder - Pandya

Bowlers -

Attacking Spinners- Kuldeep, Chahal

holding spinner- Jadeja, ashwin, Axar ( will defintely have these guys in plan for exp, variety)

Attacking seamer- Shami, Avesh, Nathu, Umesh

The one who keeps things tight- Bhuvi, rajpoot

Left arm seamer- Sran, kulwant

Death over specialist -  bumrah, thampy

Few players ill have in mix- Sarfraz, Siraj, Sanghwan, Rana , M ashwin, Rahul chahar

We have to try a lot of players rather being rigid on few and have backups to - injury, form anything can change

Players who shudnt be even on radar- Rahane, mishra, karthik, dhawal, unadkat, yuvraj singh

The approach should be to list out what should be the best  team combination  and then look if anyone can fit that role .

If some one can fit the role ,  give such persons chance to ply and then assess . If we do not have some one , then go for the best guys       currently available .

I think there was a post very akin to this  here but forgot the name .

       Ideal combo can be :

         1. Have an opener who a is leftie  -  any new guy  apart from Dhawan ?

          2. Have an opener  who is aggressive and good against short stuff  - may be Pant ? Any one else ?

          3. Have  an opener who can be anchor but can accelerate -  Rohit ,  others??

          4. Best bat and captain -   No issues right now unless he messes it up due to his foolishness.

          4.   Number 4  -  good thinking cricketer - can adapt his game as per match situation. Should be good against pace and has technique                    as well big shots against spinners / part timers . Good fielder too  -   KL Rahul , Manish , Shreyas Iyer ??

         5. Number 5  - Same as above + can bowl a bit and a good fielder   -  Kedar Jadhav ( fielding suspect )  , Shankar ?

         6. Keeper and a good bat -  Pant , Samson , Kishan , Dhoni ( if he is fit and in good form)  ??

         7.  All rounder /Pace  -        Hardik .

         8. All rounder /Spin -    Axar Patel, Krunal

9 . Wrist Spinner  Leggie  -   Chahal , Karn sharma , Rahul Chahar

         10. Wrist spinner  -  Kuldeep Yadav .

         12.  All rounder /Spinner containing role  -    Anyone ??

         11.  Wicket taking opening bowler with swing/seam -Right arm  -   Bhuvi , Shami  , Ankit rajppot,  , sandeep sharma

         12.  Opening bowler with swing/seam -Left Arm   -   Sangwan , Kejrolia

          13.  Pacers for middle and death overs  with skill -  Bhumrah, Siraj , Thampi, /kejrolia /Nathu

What selectors should do is in next 12-15 months , try  guys who can fill in these roles so that at least 2 guys are shortlisted for each of           this role .

its possible that we may not have candidates in each of the above roles who are of international level.

If that is the case , forget about that role pick a best guy available .

I mean if you cannot find say a  good lest arm spinner - Go for the best spinner who may be right arm .

Ideal combo will be

Dhawan

Rohit - he will not drop down after his performances in ICC tournaments

Kohli

Dhoni --- let's face it, he is not going to be dropped. At least make his accountable by batting up the order

All rounders

Krunal Pandya/Deepak Hooda - batsman who can bowl decent spin

Vijay Shankar or some batsman who can bowl decent seam up

Hardik Pandya

Bowlers

Kuldeep Yadav/Jadeja

Bhuvi

Shami

Bumrah

This gives you 7 batting options, 7 bowling options and a good fielding side. Great balance.

If you want more batting, you can swap KL Rahul or Manish Pandey or Kedhar Jadhav for an all rounder.

See guys Rohit will remain in the team weather he opens or bat at 4.
Since dhawan has tightened his game we have a top 4
Dhawan/rohit/kohli/Kl rahul

Now at 5 and 6 we need hitters not accumulators, thats why Msd does not fits in.
Neither Manish pandey . Infact Suresh Raina with his bowling and Fileding and hitting
Is better no. 5. So if u need an experienced player there , Play Raina ..
.Manish will be back up batsmen.

Pant is too young .Play him at 6 for a while and then slowly promote him up the order.
Play Pandya at 7 and three pacers and kuldeep.

Open with Pant In t-20s and remove dhawan and play the same team

Rohit/Dhawan/Kohli/Rahul/Raina/Pant/Pandya/Kuldep/Bhuvi/shami/Bumrah

manish/JadhaV/Chahal/Yadav

That doesnt give you many bowling options. If one or two bowlers go for runs, you have nobody to fall back on like it happened in the game against Sri Lanka. This is where all rounders come in handy.

Deepak Hooda is a great option for the middle order. Good attacking batsman who can bowl spin. They need to get him in the scheme of things as soon as possible. Or it should be Krunal Pandya. Cant go back to Raina, Rahane, Yuvi etc.

Vijay Shankar looks like another good option instead of a regular batsman like Kedhar or KL Rahul because all the batsmen dont contribute anything with the ball. Unless you give them an opportunity, you never know how good they are. Series against WI are the games where you try them out but unfortunately, another opportunity wasted.

Looking for 7 bowling options is drag on batting . Max 6 bowling options in a team  . Others should be out & out good batsmen

Having 7 bowlers is a drag but its an advantage if you have batsmen who can bowl. Deepak Hooda, Krunal or Vijay Shankar should deliver as batsman but because they can also bowl decently, it will be an advantage unlike having a whole batting order who cannot bowl a few overs when needed. It gives you more balance and can go for Plan B, Plan C if nothing works on the day.

6)MS/Pant

8) Shami

9) Bumrah

10) Bhuvi/Kuldeep

11) Chahal

Extras: Jadhav, Krunal, Jadeja, Yadav

This squad would win the WC methinks. 5 batsmen who can play a long innings. 3 players capable of finishing matches.

You have only 5 bowlers and one of them is an all rounder. If any of them has a bad day, you are focked. All the batsmen can only bat. This is why you need more all rounders.

Replacing one of the batsmen makes the lineup too weak. In a match where our top order collapses, you are guaranteed a loss. For example in the CT final our top 3 got out and none of the remaining batsmen had shown the ability to bat a long innings.

If we can't rely on 5 bowlers to bowl 50 overs, then it's better to drop some of them and try new ones IMO.

No we need 6th bowler, most teams have it

We dnt have luxury of sehwag, sachin , ganguly n soon yuvraj anymore

Jadhav is someone who can give u max 3-4 overs and soon teams will sought him to

Thats were we need to look at Krunal n shankar

Among 5 bowlers one is pandya who lacks domestic exp so for him to give 10 overs consistently u need few yrs....n even if he does any bowler can have off day so u need the 6th bowler.

Krunal n shankar are good with bat as well and can hit as well, they can easily contribute more then 5 overs n if needed 10 also

You are assuming the batting all rounder will not deliver as a regular batsman. You wont know how good he is unless he plays some games. If he has the capability, we will also have someone who can back up some of the bowlers. This is how good teams are built. You need to look for more options. But at the moment, not too many outsiders are getting opportunities to showcase their talent.

Since we already have Hardik a pacer all rounder , obvious preference should be a spinner all rounder .

Right now it looks like Krunal & Axar  to be the potential candidates .

But Shankar should always be around , if Hardik is injured .

May be the expectation should be just 4 overs  from him to start with  & bowl with keeper up.

Should be able to bowl  2-3 very full /Yorker length deliveries  every over .

Dude I agree but It is a prob when u play two spinners and a allrounder with two new balls.. Thats why i hv played 3 out and out pacers..And haridk will also improve in bowling with Raina he can complete 10 overs..

Raina and uv are not similar..He is 5 years yonger ..And we need experince at no. 5 and 6
