New India coach discussion thread [Update : Ravi Shastri is the Coach]

Recommended Posts

Coaching is a tough job. You need lot of expeience. Would you let someone opearte on you with no to very little experience. I think Lalchand Rajput or Moody will make an excellent coach. People who proposed Sehwag are brain dead.

I believe the tussle between Kohli and Kumble was due to Anushka. Matter seemed to be very personal to Kohli. Otherwise, there are no cricket-related issues that cant be handled with talk.

Why is Shastri bad? Team was successful the last time he was around. Maybe Kumble shouldn't have replaced him to begin with.

Shashtri Era, Better then Fletcher but thats about it. Plus we know he is bits and pieces guys.

Actually CAC thought the Kohli's problem was minor that they did not even talk to Kumble. It may be Kohli non cricketing issues with Kumble.

there's no "solution" that can be looked for if a Captain is "not happy" with the coach.  As everyone knows - ultimately its the player who's less expendable than the coach.   End of story.

Team gives suggestions on coaching issue only when asked - Kohli

Quote

Captain Virat Kohli has clarified that the Indian team offers its suggestions to the BCCI only when asked, as the board continues to look for a new coach after Anil Kumble's resignation 10 days ago. Kumble had stated his partnership with Kohli had become "untenable", even though Kohli had said at the beginning of the Champions Trophy that there were "no issues whatsoever" between the two.

Kumble later said in his resignation that he was informed by the BCCI that Kohli "had reservations with my style and about my continuing as head coach".

"From a personal point of view I can't pinpoint anything or give details," Kohli said a day before the third ODI against West Indies in Antigua. "We as a team, contrary to a lot of perceptions, only voice our opinions when asked by the BCCI for suggestions. So that is something we have always gone through as a process and that's something we respect as a team. It's been asked together, it's not like segregation of anything so we respect that process and that same procedure, if and when it takes place, we'll give our suggestions to the BCCI.

"The suggestions are given to the board who handle the procedure and there's no point saying anything out in the open because that is for us as a team to convey to the board as and when we are asked, and it's something I've mentioned before."

It became clear in Kumble's resignation that there were "misunderstandings" between him and Kohli and ESPNcricinfo had reported a month ago that the captain, and possibly a few other senior players, had expressed a lack of confidence in their coach. Kohli has hardly opened up on the issue since then, mainly saying he has "total respect" for Kumble as a cricketer, and did not want to divulge details to "maintain the sanctity of the change room".

Kohli stated on Thursday that the team was a "very closely-knit unit" and the players got along with each "really well". He also said their focus right now was on the ongoing ODI series against West Indies, which the visitors lead 1-0 after the first match was washed out.

https://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/india-team-coach-selection-to-be-on-july-10-says-sourav-ganguly-1719373

Quote

Sourav Ganguly said on Saturday that the interview to select the new India coach will be held on July 10 in Mumbai. The Cricket Advisory Committee(CAC), given the responsibility to select the new coach, also includes former Indian opener Sachin Tendulkar and former right-handed batsman VVS Laxman. "The interview will be held on July 10 in Mumbai," Ganguly told reporters at the Cricket Association of Bengal, before leaving for London to attend MCC's World Cricket committee meeting at Lord's on July 3-4.

The deadline for sending in applications for the post has been set for July 9. Former India team director Ravi Shastri has emerged as a front runner for the top job, for which the likes of Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput, Richard Pybus and Dodda Ganesh have also applied.

Sourav Ganguly, one of the three members of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), will decide the next coach of the Indian team. The former India captainbelieves that for a coach, it's important to have 'man-management' skills because 'cricket is a captain's game'. In the wake of the Virat Kohli-Anil Kumble saga, Ganguly said: "An impressive presentation does not make you a good coach. Various things are needed to make a good coach - like man-management skill, situation-understanding skill. May be, someone will be better skill-wise but will lack at man-management. You just have to move on."

Ganguly further added that, "I think cricket is a captain's game. Coach should be someone who can help and get the team going."

He also emphasised that the Kohli-Kumble story was "past and should be left behind".

...

On Virender Sehwag's CV after he applied for the job, Ganguly said: "I've seen Sehwag's CV and it's not a two-liner one. He has a complete CV. But can you become the India coach by sending a CV? Coach is made on the ground. And he is Sehwag, a known personality. Everyone knows him and his cricketing skills. He's not someone who has come from Midnapore district of West Bengal. So I don't think it's an issue. We will sit, talk and finalise. Difficult to take a name at the moment."

It looks like Sehwag didn't send a two line CV. Where did that nonsense come from then?

Some tabloid I would imagine.

It looks like every major newspaper ran the story. Someone either fed them false info to malign Sehwag, they print anything in their papers without checking the reliability of the source, or one of them just made it up to sell papers and the others ran with it.

Second possibility seems more likely IMO.
