Rahane has been averaging 31 since England series

Rahane is not a natural ODI batsman and has been trying very hard to adapt to that format in the last year.

 

This might have resulted in some bad habits creeping in while batting in tests.

 

He is very important for our team in SA test matches and needs to focus on tests now.

One unsurprising stat in this is out of 19 times he got dismissed during this period, 12 times he got out to a spinner. This weakness was unidentified when he toured last time. This time they will unleash Keshav Maharaj and the whole bunch of other spinners against him. So he better pull up his socks and starts delivering at home as well. Home runs are not easy runs if you are weak against spin.

Only if he is in form. I'm quite concerned about his prolonged lapses.

He tends to not like batting in India, generally more comfortable overseas- the phainty he gave to pat Cummins in dharamsala earlier this year on a super quick wicket was something to behold. I'd like to see him promoted to number 3- he likes the hard ball and would nullify the spin threat somewhat

Assuming Che plays, I don't think he can bat down the order, i.e. at 5 and below since he takes a while to get going and may run out of partners in the tail. One possibility is to have VK at 5 and Pujara at 4 but that won't work either. I think Rahane, if he discovers his mojo is good at 5, since he can score at a fairly brisk rate especially against pacers.

Rahane should play the SA series. Having said that, his rope cannot be extended forever. Dravid played for the last 3-4 years of his career averaging in the mid-30s, which is not acceptable for a batsman.

You can't just drop people from the team for having a bad phase. Rahane has been India's main stay in the batting along with Kohli and Vijay. You can just get rid of them and play who? Rohit? Please I will rather have Jadeja or Ashwin play as a batsman for Mr Rohit. He is sitting duck in test cricket outside India. No matter what his form is, he is a sure starter for the SA tests. No one cares about the millionth test series versus the Lankans.
